Chapter 19: Attack

1649 Words
After we had finished getting ready for bed, I managed to fall asleep next to Hunter’s both perfect and terrifying form. I had the same dream as always but something this time had it feeling so real. I could feel everything, the cold air, the weight of my body on the slab. The smell, like iron and something burning. I realized I was dying at the end and then Hunter woke me up as always, but something felt off, I looked at him and he smiled. Hunter never smiled, not at me, then I looked down at his hand, he was holding the blade, and still smiling, he stabbed me. I screamed and lashed out, sweating and begging, “please Hunter, don’t kill me, please!” I found myself being shaken awake and saw Hunter in bed next to me, I was truly awake now and relief flooded me. The whole time I had not cried, not when being held captive and beaten, not when being freed, not even with the night terrors, not while I was awake anyway, but now, here, I burst into tears. I sobbed hard and couldn’t stop myself, embarrassed I spluttered, “I’m sorry,” to Hunter who was sat beside me. “It’s fine,” he said softly. I leaned against him, half expecting him to shrink away, he didn’t. He put an arm around me, careful, almost hesitant and he held me while I cried. When my tears slowed I sniffled, Hunter’s fingers brushed gently through my hair, pushing sweaty strands away from my face gently, and we made eye contact. I noticed he had a tender look on his face, something I’d never seen before. After a few seconds of staring at one another, we both grew awkward and Hunter moved away from me. “Are you ok now?” He asked in a more neutral tone. It made me a little sad but I nodded. Laying down and facing away from him, I wondered if he knew I was sad at his change of tone because he lay down behind me, not touching, just there. A moment passed, then he silently and softly brushed his fingers through my hair, playing with it until I fell asleep. When I woke up, Hunter was gone. I got up, and of course, found him watching TV. I walked into the kitchen, still half-asleep to get breakfast, and tripped over Hunter’s boots. Picking one up I threw it at the back of his head. I wouldn’t have done it if he’d been human, but seeing as he had held me captive, and was a demon, I figured he could handle it. The look he gave me sent chills down my spine, so feigning nonchalance I snapped, “boots belong by the front door.” Then I ran out of the house under some illusion I was late for something. Now I was outside, I didn’t really know what to do. I couldn’t go back to work yet, and I dread to think what I’d interrupt if I knocked on Melissa’s door. I headed into town and bought food shopping, on my way back I cut through the alleyway like I always did and got about halfway down when someone punched me in the back. The shopping bags flew from my hands and I fell to my knees pain exploding through them. I looked up and saw a man, no, a werewolf because his eyes were glowing gold, and I’d come across enough werewolves to know the signs. He had brown hair from what I could tell with the hood that was pulled up over his head, he wasn’t much taller than me, maybe 5,6. He punched me in the face when I looked up at him. “Where’s your purse?” He growled. Really? I thought, a werewolf and the toughest thing he could think to do was mug a woman? I spat blood onto the floor while he rummaged around in my bag, he only found a five dollar bill. Angry, he growled, “I’ll just have to take something else then.” He kicked me in the side and in the head, and then he grabbed between my legs. No way! I fought back, and he managed to tear my shirt open, I kicked out at him and bit his hand hard, he loosened his grip, and I managed to wriggle out from under him. Getting to my feet quickly I kicked him in the side of the head. “d**k!” I yelled and then ran, I knew I was no match for a werewolf, I had only momentarily stunned him. Looking back, I actually saw him chasing after me, could hear his heavy footsteps getting closer. I ran faster and thanked the heavens when I saw my house come into view, I didn’t care if he knew where I lived because inside, Hunter, my demon bodyguard was there, at least I hoped he would play bodyguard and protect me, you never could tell with him. I realized my keys were still in my bag the werewolf had taken, and I began banging on the door frantically. “Open up!” Turning to look back, I saw that the werewolf had disappeared. Hunter opened the door, and I collapsed onto the floor at his feet. Without saying a word, he gently took me by the elbow and helped me to my feet, and shut the door. Still holding onto me, he led me to the bathroom. “Where’s your medical kit?” He asked. My face hurt so bad I couldn’t bring myself to speak, even breathing felt sharp in my chest. I lifted my hand weakly and pointed to the cabinet. He opened it up and got the medical box out. I sat on the closed toilet lid while he sat on the edge of the bathtub. The bathroom was pretty small so it meant my legs were between his, putting us very close together when he leaned forward and began cleaning me up. I couldn’t help but stare into his beautiful and unusual violet eyes with flecks of gold and that gold rim. The caught the light every time he moved, flickering in a way that wasn’t quite human. Not that he was. Luckily, he was too busy cleaning me up to notice. Finally he met my eyes and said, “I need to stitch the cut on your forehead.” I nodded. Getting the thread and needle, the needle glinted under the bathroom light and I swallowed. He began to stitch, and I hissed and winced, my fingers gripping the edge of the seat, nails digging into the plastic as he worked. Each stitch tugged at my skin, slow and deliberate, and I forced myself to stay still. When he was done I breathed a sigh of relief. “What happened?” He asked, “you trip over a curb?” I scowled at him, “oh yes, sure, because tripping over a curb would make my shirt burst open.” He looked down at my cleavage and answered, “well you do have very big b.reasts.” He said it so matter-of-factly but I still blushed hard and held my shirt together to hide them. “I was attacked actually,” I snapped. His tone changed then, and the rage in his voice both scared and surprised me. “Who attacked you?” I shrugged, trying to seem unaffected. “I don’t know, some random werewolf trying to mug me, when I didn’t have the money he figured I owed him with my body.” I had never seen it before, but I could have sworn his eyes of violet bled into a deeper red tone of color, into something dangerous. Standing up he asked icily, “did he r.ape you?” I shook my head no and saw his eyes turn violet again. “He tried to, but I kicked him in the head, called him a d.ick and ran.” He snorted at that, “yeah, sounds like something you’d do.” In a less icy tone he added, “good girl.” I was seriously starting to wonder now if the counselor was right about me liking the dominant and submissive stuff because besides the idea of him having his way with me, him calling me a good girl now made me tingle between my legs. “What did he look like?” His voice brought me back to reality. “I’m not sure, he was wearing a black hoodie that was pulled up, his eyes were his wolf’s gold, he had short brown hair from what I could see, he was around 5,6 and built muscular.” He nodded, and taking me by the elbow again, he pulled me up onto my feet and led me to my room. “Rest, I’ll make sure he doesn’t come back.” He gently helped me out of my torn clothes and into my pajamas again. I had gotten used to him either seeing me or helping me undress when I’d been captive, so it didn’t feel awkward, and he didn’t make it awkward like his Pervert brother would have. I wanted to ask him why he cared enough to protect me, but I was afraid of some cold, cruel reply, so I said nothing. I lay down in the bed and Hunter pulled the covers over me. I figured he deserved some of my kindness and as he went to leave I said, “thank you Hunter, you make me feel safe.” It was true, I realized, and Hunter, I could have sworn, almost blushed and smiled a little before quickly leaving the room. I knew he would probably watch TV before coming in, if he wanted to sleep beside me again, that was.
