Chapter 29: Possession

3034 Words
When we entered the bedroom, both myself and Father Jacobs were hit by the overpowering stench of sulfur. I looked at the girl tied with restraints to the bed by her wrists. I was horrified, I had been expecting it to be a teenager but this child was no older than eleven and looked malnourished, bruised and cut and the evil that looked out through her dark brown eyes made them look almost black. The demon spoke in a deep guttural tone, “stay away from me, priest!” Father Jacobs ignored the demon and did the sign of the cross on himself, I copied him, but the demon was so focused on the priest it hadn’t even noticed me. Father Jacobs got his bible out and began to pray, at first, the demon just stared at him silently, but then it burst into laughter with that creepy guttural voice mixed with the little girls voice, it sent shivers down my spine. The demon screamed at us, “f**k off, you f*****g cunts!” We ignored it and carried on praying, which only enraged the demon more. It took quite a few hours and I was exhausted towards the end, but we had managed to weaken the demon enough to force it to reveal its name. “Beezelbub!” It screamed before passing out. “Let’s stop for today,” father Jacobs said, and left the room without waiting for me to answer. I let father Jacobs explain everything to the little girl’s mother while I waited outside. When he came out, I asked him, “why didn’t we finish the exorcism? You had the demon’s name.” He looked at me, and I noticed how pale and afraid he looked. “I’m going to need more help from the church for this one, this demon, I dare not say his name aloud outside of the exorcism, he is extremely powerful, an exorcist exorcised this very same demon before in a woman but failed, the toll of the possession killed the woman and the demon carried on haunting and tormenting the priest until the day he died, it was terrible. I’m so sorry, but I must go and find out what can be done.” He rushed off, leaving me bewildered and scared. I made my way home thinking on what he had said, how afraid he had looked and I wondered if…hmm. I got home and saw Hunter making himself a drink. “Hey you,” I smiled. “Hey,” he answered but didn’t smile, I rolled my eyes at that. “I need to talk to you,” I said. That got his attention and he looked up at me across the counter. “What’s wrong?” He asked. “The exorcism didn’t go great, we managed to get the demon’s name, but it completely freaked the priest out, and he stopped the exorcism and left, said he needed more help for this one.” I sat down on the table chair and held my head in my hands. “Hunter, it wasn’t a woman it possessed, not even a teenager, it was just a little girl, no older than eleven.” I looked up at Hunter to see him looking at me with an unreadable expression. “Unfortunately, demons don’t discriminate on who they possess no matter the age.” “The priest said he knew an exorcist who dealt with this same demon before, but it ended up killing the woman it possessed, and then it spent the rest of the exorcist’s life tormenting him and haunting him.” Hunter looked emotionless. “Don’t you care?” I snapped at him. Sighing he sat down opposite me. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you want me to say, this is how we are, we are evil and cruel and our main purpose is to hurt those who God loves and to try and take their souls.” I looked up at him horrified. “What?” He frowned at me, “you already knew this Destiny. You know what I and my brother are.” “You’ve possessed people…children?” I asked. He shook his head, “no, that’s not my job, but I’m not good, none of us are good.” I nodded my head, “I know what you are, but you were all angels once, you were good once, and I see that goodness still, in you and your brother.” He grew uncomfortable, I knew because he became icy and unreadable, so I changed the subject. “Can you make the demon leave her? It’s just a little girl Hunter, she doesn’t deserve that.” “There are little girls and boys all over the world being possessed—“ I cut him off, “please spare me the details, I know she’s not the only one, but she’s my case, I’ve seen her tiny little body frail and battered and cut, if you can just at least help me with her, please Hunter?” He was quiet for a moment and then asked, “you said it told you it’s name?” I looked at him almost hopeful, “yes, it’s called Beezlebub.” Hunter’s eyebrows rose at that, and I asked, “what is it?” “He is a very powerful demon, but that fucker was also meant to be tortured by me but managed to evade it for a long time, now I know where he is.” “So you’ll do it?” I asked. “Yes, I can try, I can’t exorcise him obviously, but I’ll do what I can.” When the morning came, I jumped out of bed, got dressed and tied my hair back, I was too eager to get this demon out of the little girl, and I didn’t want Hunter to change his mind. I found him asleep on the sofa with the tv still on, usually I’d be mad, but right now, I wanted to save the little girl, so I turned the tv off and shook Hunter awake. “Get up, come on, I want to go as soon as possible.” He groggily looked up at me and mumbled, “what? Is it even eight am yet, won’t her mother still be resting?” I was yanking him up by the arm while I talked, “I doubt it, that’s her baby your evil fucker of a brother is inside of. Come on, hurry up.” I left him to go and make a phone call to my boss, I knew I couldn’t act without my bosses approval and prayed as hard as I could that Hunter would be allowed to help. The phone rang twice before Mrs. Denford answered. “Hello?” “Hey, it’s Destiny, so the exorcism didn’t go so well yesterday and father Jacobs said the demons too powerful to exorcise, he needs more help, but it will take time. I want to save that little girl right now, so if you’ll let me, I would like to take Hunter to remove the demon.” I rushed my words so fast I was breathless by the end. Mrs Denford was quiet for a minute and then asked, “what can Hunter do?” “He’s a very powerful demon, he will be able to get the demon to leave by today.” I had no clue if that was true, but I was desperate, the image of that poor broken girl’s body burned in my brain. My boss had sounded uncertain, but she gave the go ahead on the condition that I took full responsibility for any problems and that if asked, Mrs Denford had no part in any of this. Like I knew she would be, the mother was happy to have us come over right away and so before it was even ten am we were knocking at the door. The mother opened it up and smiled wearily at me, and then her eyes rose up to Hunter and his perfect angelic looks, beautiful and flawless and built like a warrior. I watched her blush and smile stupidly at Hunter, and she said to him, “wow, have they managed to bring archangel Michael himself to my door?” It was a half joke and I swear I saw a pained look cross Hunter’s face before he plastered a smile onto his face. I tried to hide my surprise, I had expected him to snarl or something. “No, ma’am, but I am here to help your daughter as best I can.” She let us in and then broke down into tears. “I can’t do it anymore,” she cried. “My baby is gone, that thing has broken her body, and it’s killing her more every day, if she dies I’ll die.” She sobbed uncontrollably and again, I found I needed to hide my surprise at Hunter’s reaction, as he saw the mother where she had collapsed onto her knees from grief, he looked guilty and ashamed. He got onto his knees in front of the mother and gently but firmly grabbed her face between his hands, forcing her to make eye contact. “I am so sorry, but I swear to you that by the time I leave this place today your daughter will be back, I’ll make sure of it.” He got up and headed up the stairs like he knew where to go, and I remembered him saying they could sense one another nearby. I sat the mother down on a chair and rushed to follow Hunter. He waited for me and let me lead the way. As I opened the door, I had to cover my nose from the stench. The demon looked at me and grinned, “come back for more fun, have we?” He began to cackle, and then he grew as silent as the dead when Hunter stepped into the room. Hunter ignored the smell, I had no idea how. He looked at the bruised and cut, scarily underweight little girl tied to the bed and didn’t even bat an eyelid, he had that cold unreadable face on so I had no idea what he was thinking. “Hello Beezelbub.” The demon looked shocked, confused but most importantly, he looked terrified. “How are you here?” Hunter shrugged, “the queen, it’s a long story and one you would have known about had you not been hiding inside this child. I never took you to have the tastes of a low-level demon that wanted a child to torment.” The demon yanked against the ties at that and growled, “do not forget who I am and my rank, Sammael!” My eyes widened in surprise and I looked at Hunter, but he had his back to me. Sammael was his real name? I had heard of that before and always confused it as another name for Satan, but clearly not. Hunter walked beside the demon and leaned down low to the little girl’s ear, and snarled, “and don’t forget who I am and what I do, our master is most displeased with you Beezelbub, you know better than to avoid torture that’s been requested by him, you are long overdue and last I spoke to Lucifer he mentioned adding another five years, and you know how creative I like to get.” The demon shrank back from Hunter in both fear and hatred, “why would I ever go back, I’ll wait for this maggot to die, and then I’ll jump into another.” Hunter rolled his eyes, “stop with the theatrics, there’s no one here for you to impress and terrify, Destiny already has met a few of us and knows we are not the terrifying deranged and ugly beasts you are trying to portray, talk to me brother to brother, and maybe I can lessen the time of torture.” Beezelbub looked warily at Hunter but after a minute or two, I noticed that the stench was gone from the room and the little girl’s eyes were a natural brown rather than the black they’d looked before. He also used her voice now and not that guttural voice, I wasn’t sure if that was more creepy, a little girl talking like she was anything but! “Ok brother, let’s talk, why do you care if I possess a soul?” Hunter shrugged, “I don’t, but when it comes to children, it seems a tad pathetic even for you, brother.” It was Beezelbubs turn to shrug, “perhaps, but it’s better than being tortured all the damn time just for simply speaking my mind! “I understand, we all do, you know that, but—“ I cut Hunter off and stepped forward. “Uh what? You say you don’t like being tortured, then why on earth are you torturing this innocent little girl if you know how it feels?” I snapped. The child’s gaze flicked to mine and looked me up and down with disdain, “who are you to dare speak to me?” “She is mine, and you will treat her with respect, she has more empathy towards us than you realise brother,” Hunter answered. Beezelbub looked more curious with that answer and was quiet while he stared at me, it freaked me out, but I didn’t let it show. Finally, he answered, “she’s in no pain, she simply sleeps while I am in control, I care not for adults, but I can pity a mere pup.” “Pity? You’re killing her, what’s the point of possessing someone and destroying their body until they die if you want to stay hiding in it to avoid torture?” Beezlebub looked surprised with my question, “well sometimes we merely get bored, mostly it’s because we either want to feed on the families fear and pain, but when it comes to organs failing and the body dying that’s because it cannot survive with two spirits inside at the same time.” “Why do you want to feed on fear and pain? You were once angels of love and light with God, don’t you want that?” Hunter gave me a warning look and the demon hissed at me, “f**k you! You know nothing!” I yelled back at him, “don’t you want to be back with God!” “Shut up!” He screamed at me and started thrashing on the straps to get to me. I didn’t stop though and ignored Hunter when he glared at me to stop. “God loves you, why do you hate him so much it makes no sense, you sound miserable and afraid in hell, why don’t you want to be back with God?” The demon screamed so loud it pierced my skull and I had to hold my hands over my ears and then the screaming turned into sobs, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking sobs that I’d never heard anyone cry before and it broke my heart. I hadn’t realized I was crying too until Hunter looked at me with awe on his face. I ignored him and knelt down by Beezlebub and held his hand, or rather the little girl’s hand. “I’m sorry,” I said. “You humans know nothing!” He cried. “I know you hate us because God forgives us our sins, but he never forgave you yours.” He looked at me and nodded, “then why ask me such questions?” “Because I know he still loves you, can you imagine how much it broke his heart to find out you all wanted him gone, destroyed? When all he ever did was love you? If you hurt this much, can you imagine how much more his pain must be?” I had no idea how I was saying all this, I didn’t even know if any of it was true, but it simply flowed out of me and both Beezelbub and Hunter just stared at me. “How do you know he wouldn’t forgive you? Did you ever ask?” I asked. They both nodded. “In hell, have you ever asked?” Beezelbub shook his head, “never, Lucifer would torture us until our minds were broken if we dared.” “How much do you love God and trust that he is more powerful? Pray to him now and beg for forgiveness and mean it with every fiber of your being.” I didn’t know why I was doing this, but it felt important. They both looked horrified at my words, it was beezelbub who answered, “it doesn’t matter where we are, Lucifer will hear it, and he will know.” “Screw Lucifer, he’s the reason you’re in this mess in the first place, you’ve spent all this time hating on God, but it’s Lucifer you should have felt that hate for, it’s his fault, not Gods, he lavished you with false promises. Prove to God your love for him and pray, face the fear and do it anyway.” The demon shook his head and refused and wouldn’t talk to me after that. He looked to Hunter, “I shall leave and return to hell and await your punishment.” “You’ll be waiting a while brother, the queen is much displeased with me and both her and Lucifer are on their way here on earth, I think you’ll find it quiet down there for a while.” Beezlebub looked surprised, “ok, I have no idea what mess you’ve gotten yourself into, but I’m sure they will fill me in when I return.” “Uh, before you go, at least heal the poor girl those horrific injuries you’ve inflicted her with,” I said. He rolled his eyes but nodded. I still didn’t believe this was actually happening until the girl looked like a normal little girl again, no cuts or bruises and without even saying goodbye, Beezlebub was just gone. .
