Chapter 16: Home

1043 Words
Jake ran to Melissa and unchained her while Hunter unchained me, I had to ask, “why did you do that?” He looked down at me, still giving nothing away and shrugged, “maybe your stubbornness intrigues me, maybe I respected your bravery.” Jake came over and spun Hunter to face him. “What the f**k brother, what have you done, she will torture us for years, no, actually he will,” Jake shuddered slightly, his words and his fear reminding me they were demons, like actual demons from hell, Ignoring my own fear at the thought of that I asked, “wait, the queen is still alive?” Jake answered, “yes, you can’t kill what was never alive which is why I said she will torture us and not kill us, we can’t die, he only sent her back to hell using one of his more violent powers no doubt pissing her off big time.” Turning to Hunter, he growled, “you know she’s going to f*****g tell Lucifer everything, right?” I felt chills go down my spine at the mention of Lucifer, I had never seen Jake look so angry before, even when he had punished me, Hunter looked unfazed. “I know, all he does is b***h about her anyway, he will be more pissed about me f*****g up the plan, but at least Melissa’s alive, or would you rather she had been killed?” Jake lost the anger and, sighing, shook his head no and went back to Melissa. “You can both stay at our homes,” Melissa spoke, she seemed to regain some determination now that the queen was gone. Grabbing Jake by the hand, she started walking and then stopped, “wait, where the hell are we? How do we get home?” Hunter answered her, “we are on private property, the owner is away on business.” When Melissa looked at the slabs, he explained, “she found them lying with some other unwanted rubble and decided to use them as slabs for you two, the chains were her own handiwork.” Hunter walked over to Melissa when she trembled slightly and softly asked, “where is home?” I hid my surprise, not once had I ever heard him sound gentle. Melissa thought for a moment, and pulling herself together, she said, “Los Angeles.” He gave a nod and standing beside her, he took her hand in his and grabbed Jake’s hand in his other, looking over towards me and in a colder tone he said, “join hands, unless you want to stay here.” I had zero doubt he would absolutely leave me behind, so I quickly grabbed Melissa’s free hand and waited for him to chant or something, he didn’t, I saw that strange shimmering that always happened when our destination changed, it was very disorienting and next thing we were all stood in the busy city of Los Angeles. After so long in isolation, it was too much, too loud, too busy, but I managed to not have a panic attack, damned if I was going to let Hunter see any weakness. Melissa struggled more, but she did a good job, only grabbing Jake’s hand tightly and pressing herself against his arm. We walked back to Melissa’s place first, I wanted to see she got home safely before leaving her, I knew it was stupid seeing as we had two demons with us. When we arrived I hugged Melissa, “I love you bestie,” I whispered. “Ditto,” Melissa whispered back, our little saying we had stolen from our favorite film ‘ghost’. I hesitated but then decided he deserved it, so I pulled Jake into a hug too, he had to bend down so I could wrap my arms around his neck, and I whispered, “thank you.” “It was Hunter who saved the day,” he replied. “Yes, but it’s your kind heart that I think helped influence him so much.” He grinned, but then said, “I wouldn’t be so sure it was me that changed his mind.” I frowned in confusion, but he only winked and kissed me on the cheek. I ignored Hunter and started walking off. “Hey Des, you not taking Hunter home with you?” Melissa asked. I snorted at that and answered, “nope, you keep him.” He raised an eyebrow at me, and it surprised me, I expected him to sneer or something, he shrugged and stepped inside Melissa’s home with Jake. I waved to Melissa and quickly started walking before Melissa changed my mind. When I got home I ran straight for the shower and turned it on. I stood under the hot running water for a long time before climbing out and pulling on my warm soft wolf pajamas, ok they were cute wolf puppies but no one needed to know that. I collapsed onto the bed exhausted and slept like a baby, until night terrors woke me up. I dreamt of the queen, smiling, covered in blood, my blood and Melissa’s, Melissa’s lifeless form was on the slab. Looking down, I saw the knife inside of her chest, realizing the escape had only been a dream, we never survived. I woke screaming and thrashing and couldn’t catch my breath as sweat dripped down my face. It had felt so real, and I turned the lamp on, knowing there was no way I would sleep after that. When morning came I got dressed in jeans, which felt so strange after so long with nothing but loose rags. I pulled on a white tank top and decided to brush and straighten my hair, loving how it had looked when Melissa had done it. Screw it, I did a half up and down hairstyle and clipped in a white bow, letting my hair fall down softly past my breasts. I grabbed some makeup and lightly applied foundation, trying to replicate how Melissa had done it, I did a pretty good job. The white tank top and bow really complimented my midnight ebony skin tone, and I slipped on some trainers to complete the look.
