Chapter 10

1123 Words
The lights in the cafe flickered violently. Broken glass covered the floor, and several computers hovered inches above the desks, trembling as if an invisible storm surrounded them. Elena stood in the center of the chaos. Her chest rose and fell rapidly. Her head throbbed with pain as fragments of memories flashed through her mind like lightning. White laboratory walls. Machines humming. Scientists whispering. Her own voice crying out in fear. Then, the man standing in the doorway. The same man from the video. The man who had created her. He stepped slowly into the café, his shoes crunching softly over the broken glass. “Elena,” he said calmly. Her eyes burned as she stared at him. “Stay back,” she warned. The computers around her lifted higher into the air, vibrating with unstable energy. But the man didn’t look afraid. In fact, he looked impressed. “Remarkable,” he said quietly. Elena felt anger surge through her chest. “You did this to me!” she shouted. The tables in the cafe shook violently. One of them flipped over and slammed against the wall. The man simply watched. “Yes,” he said. “And you’re welcome.” Her jaw tightened. “Welcome?” “You should be grateful,” he replied calmly. “You’re the most advanced human experiment ever created.” Elena felt her stomach twist. “I’m not an experiment.” “Everything about you says otherwise.” He continued walking forward slowly. Elena raised her hands instinctively. A chair suddenly flew across the room and smashed into the wall beside him. The impact shattered wood and sent splinters flying. But the man didn’t even flinch. “You see?” he said. “Power.” Elena’s voice trembled with rage. “You kidnapped a six-year-old child!” “Correction,” he said. “I improved her.” The words made her feel sick. “You’re insane.” “No,” he replied calmly. “I’m a visionary.” He stopped a few feet away from her. “You were always meant to become something greater.” The objects floating around Elena began spinning slowly in the air. “Daniel was right,” she said. “You’ve been watching me.” “For years,” the man confirmed. “Every step of your life.” Her heart pounded harder. “You manipulated everything.” “Yes.” “Why?” His smile returned. “Because greatness requires patience.” Elena felt something dark rising inside her. “You destroyed my life.” “On the contrary,” he said. “I gave you one.” The man folded his hands behind his back. “Do you know why the network exists?” She didn’t answer. “To control the future.” Lightning flashed outside the windows as thunder rolled across the city. “The world is changing,” he continued. “Governments are weak. Chaos grows every year.” “And your solution was experimenting on children?” she snapped. He shrugged. “History is written by those willing to make difficult choices.” Elena’s hands trembled. “You’re a monster.” “Perhaps.” Then he leaned slightly closer. “But I’m also the reason you’re alive.” Her head throbbed again. Memories flickered across her mind. The laboratory. The machines. The experiments. Her breathing grew faster. “You erased my memories.” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because you weren’t ready yet.” Elena felt a sudden wave of dizziness. The floating computers dropped slightly before rising again. “What’s happening to me?” she whispered. “You’re awakening.” His voice sounded almost proud. “The suppression program is failing.” The objects in the room suddenly shot upward, slamming against the ceiling. Elena gasped. “I can’t control it!” “You will,” he said calmly. “Eventually.” Her voice shook. “You think I’m going to help you?” “I know you will.” “Never.” His smile faded. “You don’t understand yet.” He gestured toward the broken cafe. “You’re not like other people anymore.” Elena’s heart pounded. “I don’t care.” “You will.” He reached into his coat slowly. Elena immediately lifted both hands. Several metal chairs flew toward him. But before they could hit him, He moved. Faster than she expected. The chairs slammed into the wall behind him instead. Elena stared in shock. “How did you” He pulled a small device from his coat. A remote. “Because,” he said calmly, “you’re not the only experiment.” He pressed the button. Suddenly, Elena’s body froze. Pain exploded through her head. She screamed as electricity seemed to surge through her brain. The floating objects crashed violently to the floor. Her knees buckled. She collapsed onto the ground. “Daniel!” she cried into the phone. But Daniel’s voice was distant. “Elena! What’s happening?!” The man walked toward her slowly. “You see,” he said calmly, “we installed a failsafe.” Elena gasped in pain. “A control signal embedded in your neural system.” Her vision blurred. “You… can’t control me…” He crouched beside her. “Not forever.” Then he leaned closer. “But long enough.” The door behind him suddenly burst open. A man ran into the cafe. Tall. Breathing hard. Holding a gun. “Elena!” Her heart stopped. Marcus. He was alive. The scientist turned slowly. “Ah,” he said calmly. “The hero returns.” Marcus aimed the gun directly at him. “Get away from her.” The scientist sighed. “You should have stayed dead.” Marcus pulled the trigger. BANG. The bullet struck the scientist’s shoulder. He stumbled backward, surprised. Marcus rushed forward and grabbed Elena’s arm. “Come on!” She struggled to stand. “I can’t… move…” Marcus looked at the device in the scientist’s hand. Without hesitation, he fired again. The bullet shattered the remote. The pain in Elena’s head vanished instantly. Her power surged back like a tidal wave. The lights exploded. Windows shattered. The entire café shook violently. Marcus grabbed her again. “Elena! We have to go!” She nodded weakly. Together they ran out of the destroyed café into the rain soaked street. Behind them, the scientist slowly stood up. Blood ran down his shoulder. But he was smiling again. “Elena…” he whispered. “The awakening has only just begun.” Far above the city, hidden cameras watched everything. And deep inside the network’s headquarters An alarm began to sound. Because their most dangerous experiment had just escaped.
