I didn't know how long I stayed but the pain eventually faded.
Not completely, never completely, but enough for me to breathe normally again.
I sat on the edge of the table, staring at the floor while the last echoes of the curse slowly loosened their grip on my chest. My shirt clung to my skin from sweat, and my hands were still trembling slightly.
‘Jane had left.’ The thought repeated in my mind like a mocking echo.
Jane had left me. She left without coming to me first.
Something about it didn’t make sense.
Jane was stubborn, loud, and emotional. If she had truly been innocent as I believed, she would have fought until the entire mansion heard her. She would have demanded justice.
Instead, she supposedly packed quietly and disappeared.
