Jane’s POV
At first, I didn’t feel the pain anymore. There was no burning in my back, no weight pressing down on my chest, no fear clawing at my throat.
It was just silent as if I had been pulled away from everything that hurt. And when I opened my eyes, I wasn’t in the forest. I was in the castle. The old castle.
I wasn’t bleeding, I wasn’t dying, but I was small again.
The realization came slowly, like a whisper brushing against my mind as I lifted my hands slightly, turning them over as if they were not mine.
“Lyra!”
That name again.
I turned quickly.
The same girl from before stood a few steps away from me, her face bright with excitement. Her eyes sparkled the way they had been the last time I saw her, full of life, full of something I couldn’t quite name.
