Chapter 3
The birds are chirping outside and the engines are roaring. Dinis, still half-sleeping, looks at his clock. 09:00 AM. He doesn’t have class today. After spending the night in his room, watching videos online, he finally wakes up. He gets up and looks down the window. The Audi isn’t there anymore.
“What can I do today? Everything is so boring.”
He looks up at his wall, observing a fantasy poster, depicting what seems to be a sort of knight, carrying a giant black spiky sword, accompanied by a weird animal-looking creature.
“Pffff… Everything is so boring in real life…”
In the background of the poster, a beautiful mountainous forest can be spotted, the scenery is majestic. Dinis then looks back at his window and compare that idyllic picture with the world outside his rooms. A big road, cars rushing one after each other, some rare olive trees in gardens, surrounded by grey buildings.
*sigh* “Can’t even find peace here.”
The young man goes downstairs. No one to be seen. His parents must be still sleeping, probably tired of the party yesterday. He goes to the kitchen, grabs a packet of cereals, pours milk in a bowl and starts eating while looking at his phone.
He starts typing “Beautiful natural spots District of Coimbra”. In the results, one particularly attracts his attention, “Serra da Lousã”, a mountain place at less than an hour by car from his home.
“Eh, why not? It’s not like I’ve got much to do anyway.”
He quickly finishes eating, dresses up and brushes his teeth. He then grabs his car keys on his table and runs downstairs. When he’s about to open the front door, he hears a feminine voice coming from upstairs.
“- *yawn* Good morning Dinis, where are you going so early? Do you have class today?
- Oh Mum, I didn’t know you were awake, uh no I don’t have class, I’m just going out.
- Oh nice, where?
- Uuuh, just with some friends, nothing special.
- Ok, take care of yourself. Oh, and that wasn’t very nice of you to leave in the middle of your sister’s birthday yesterday, don’t do it again!
- Sorry Mum, see ya.” answers Dinis while leaving the house.
He jumps in his car, turns on the engine and radio as usual and start driving towards Lousã.
“Alright, now, where do I have to go? I know where Lousã is, but not the mountain specifically.” says the boy to himself.
He’s never been really good with orientation. He drives for about half an hour before seeing a sign indicating Lousã.
“ *grumble* Dammit, where’s the mountain?! All I see is a town here! And the streets are so narrow!”
Dinis takes out his phone and open the map app, looking to see if he can find a way to the mountain.
“Alright, so, first turn left, then I just contin…”
*CRAAAAAAASH*
…
Silence. This time, his lack of attention was… deadly. Or was it?
