EZEKIEL'S POV:
“Babe!” Rue’s voice called out as soon as I slid into the car. Elyse still hadn’t returned. I rolled my eyes and turned to face her. She looked stunning in a black dress, wearing the rose necklace I had given her for our anniversary last year.
“I’m coming with you,” she announced cheerfully as she climbed in, completely oblivious to the anger radiating within me.
“Rue, you’re not going anywhere with me,” I said firmly, my eyes warning her to back off.
“Why not?” she pouted. “I’m your girlfriend,” she added, clinging to my arm. I tried to shake her off, but she wouldn’t let go. “If you don’t take me with you, I’ll go straight to Father’s chambers and tell him everything,” she threatened, fully aware that dragging Father into this was the last thing I wanted.
“Fine,” I muttered, shoving her away. “You’re on your own tonight.” I turned my back on her, frustration boiling inside me.
A few minutes later, Elyse showed up, looking confused and clearly scared.
“Get in the car, Elyse,” I ordered firmly.
Moments later, the car roared out of the iron gate and into the bustling streets. After a short drive, we pulled up next to a sleek, modern house pulsating with lights and thumping music.
As I stepped out, Chris greeted me with a big grin.
“Hey, glad you made it!” he exclaimed excitedly. But then his expression turned icy when he caught sight of Rue.
“You brought Rue!” he declared, shooting me a knowing look. I could tell what he was thinking. Chris had never liked Rue, and I hadn’t understood why until a few months back.
Apparently, she had hit on him, and when he rejected her, she turned her attention to me and she had succeeded.
Honestly, I think I might feel the same way about her now.
“Of course! I’m his only sweetheart. Zeke takes me everywhere,” Rue chimed in, prompting Chris to scoff in annoyance.
I sighed and started walking toward the entrance, Rue following closely behind while Chris stomped his feet in frustration.
“Do you know Dylan?” Chris suddenly asked, and I nodded.
“Yeah, this is his place. He’s the one throwing the party,” he explained.
“So it’s Dylan’s party, then?” I asked, feigning ignorance.
“Right,” Chris replied, and as we stepped inside, the vibrant energy enveloped us. Laughter and chatter filled the air, and colorful LED lights danced across the walls. The DJ was in full swing.
“Let me grab us some drinks,” Chris announced before heading off.
“We should dance!” Rue said, playfully tugging at my shirt.
“You go ahead,” I told her, gently pushing her toward the dance floor.
Just then, Chris returned with a bottle of whiskey and three glasses.
“I can’t believe you’re at a party like this!” a familiar voice giggled.
“Mariel?” I chuckled, giving her a quick once-over. “I didn’t expect to see you here either!”
“I see your girl is out there tearing up the dance floor with Dylan,” she whispered, a teasing smile on her face. I shook my head, clearly embarrassed by what she was implying.
“You know your friend has a thing for gorgeous guys,” I said, brushing it off like it was no big deal.
Honestly, it didn’t bother me at all. If Rue fell in love with someone else right now, I’d be over the moon.
The party was in full swing, and Chris, Mariel, and I were drinking our way through the night.
Occasionally, Chris’s friends would come over to say hi. Rue was clearly having a blast, and the relief of not having her bug me was exhilarating, thanks to Dylan for keeping her entertained.
“How’s your maid?” Mariel asked out of nowhere, catching me off guard. I almost choked on my drink, while Chris just burst out laughing.
“Why?” I asked, raising my eyebrows in surprise.
“I’m just curious,” she replied, throwing her hands up defensively. “Rue can’t stop raving about her, and when I met her earlier, I totally understood why. Oh my gosh, she’s stunning!”
“Mariel, are you seriously crushing on my maid?” I asked, feeling a wave of irritation wash over me. I didn’t want to think about the possibility of Elsa being Mariel’s type.
“I wouldn’t mind dating her. She’s just your maid, right?” The sly grin on her face made it clear she wasn’t joking at all.
“And you think Elsa is into girls?” I whispered, my fists clenching as I struggled to contain my anger.
The last thing I wanted was for anyone else to get involved, especially Mariel. I knew exactly what my relationship with Elsa meant, and if Mariel caught on, her father might find out and my father as well and that would mean trouble for me too.
“Who knows?” she shrugged, winking at Chris. “All I need is your permission to get to know her. If she’s not into girls, I’ll back off.”
I took a deep breath, staring at the glass in my hand before turning to face Mariel. “Good luck with that,” I mumbled, trying to mask my frustration. Chris shot me a knowing look, then stood up and walked away.
“Excuse me,” I muttered, feeling a surge of anxiety as I headed off to find the restroom.
I found the restroom and, after taking care of business, was about to leave when I heard voices from the other side of the wall.
“Shouldn’t you be with your boyfriend tonight?” a male voice asked.
I recognized Dylan's voice immediately, and the next words stunned me.
“I’m sure he’s not missing me,” Rue replied casually.
“I don’t know about this. I like you, but I wouldn’t want to cross the future Alpha of our pack,” he whispered.
“Don’t worry, he won’t find out. Just kiss me already,” she urged, and I felt a sharp stab of hurt. It wasn’t just the thought of her cheating on me, it was the realization that this might not be the first time.
Suddenly, a wave of pain shot through me, paralyzing me for a moment. I had no idea what was happening; the pain vanished as quickly as it came.
Regaining my composure, I walked out of the restroom. After a quick word with Chris, I left.
“We should go,” I texted Rue as I sank into the backseat of the car, trying to wrap my head around what had just happened to me.
Could this have anything to do with Elsa? Was I feeling sick because I hadn’t mated with her yet? The answer lingered at the back of my mind, but I didn’t want to jump to conclusions.
My life was getting serious, and I wasn’t ready for any of it.
