FRACTURED TRUST AND HIDDEN PASSAGES

544 Words
Leaving the cellar behind, Eva and Gideon moved directly to the servant quarters on the third floor. Pushing open the door to Clara Thorne’s room, they found the housekeeper packing a leather traveling bag by candlelight. "You knew," Eva said directly, stepping into the room. "You knew Croft was forging documents, and you knew about the poison." Clara dropped a folded apron onto the bed, her hands trembling violently. "I didn't help him kill her! I swear it!" "Then why are you fleeing?" Gideon demanded. "Because he threatened me!" Clara wept, burying her face in her hands. "Dr. Croft found out about my brother's debts in Oakhaven. He promised to clear them if I turned a blind eye to his late-night visits to Miss Beatrix's desk. I didn't know he was altering her ink! I thought he was only pressing her to sign over the land!" Clara reached into her apron and produced a silver key attached to a faded blue ribbon. "Miss Beatrix gave me this two weeks ago. She told me if anything happened to her, I must give it to you—and tell you that the true ledger rests within the heart of the house." Eva took the silver key, recognizing the intricate gear pattern etched into its bow. "The heart of the house... the central clockwork apparatus behind the parlor fireplace." They hurried down to the parlor, where the monumental carved-oak fireplace mantle loomed in the shadows. Eva located a hidden keyhole behind a decorative brass fleur-de-lis, inserted the silver key, and turned it. With a heavy grind of iron gears, the entire stone fireback swung inward, revealing a narrow corridor dominated by swinging brass pendulums. "A hidden passage connecting the study to the medical annex," Gideon whispered. Following the passage, they found an iron brazier filled with smoldering ash. Eva pulled several unburned parchment fragments from the embers using her tweezers. One piece clearly displayed Dr. Croft’s signature alongside a document detailing $250,000 in personal liabilities. "Croft was bankrupt," Eva stated, inspecting the fragment. "He forged Beatrix's signature to sell the Blackwood coastline to an industrial development firm." "Look at the secondary signature on the margin," Gideon noted, pointing to the charred corner. Eva shone her light on the fragment. Beneath Croft’s name was a second corporate seal—the official mark of Finch & Sons Restorations. Eva froze, slowly raising her light until it shone directly into Gideon’s eyes. "Finch & Sons. Your father's firm." Gideon raised his hands slowly. "Eva, listen—" "You told me Beatrix hired you to restore her antiques!" Eva said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she backed away. "Your family business is trying to buy the estate!" "My father attempted to orchestrate a deal behind my back!" Gideon said urgently, refusing to step closer. "Beatrix discovered it and confronted me weeks ago. I swore I had no part in it. That's why she kept me here—to help her secure the house against him!" "Why should I believe you?" Eva demanded. "Because if I were working with Croft, I would have left you locked in Cellar 04," Gideon answered calmly. "Beatrix trusted you to finish this, Eva. Let me help you prove who actually poisoned that inkwell."
