Cheating Boyfriend and New Fiance

1525 Words
The bus came to a stop in front of the sprawling ski resort, its façade glowing warmly against the backdrop of snow-covered peaks. Maeve stepped off, stretching her stiff legs after hours on the road. The air was crisp, tinged with pine and frost, and the sight of skiers weaving down the slopes did little to ease her nerves. She checked her phone for the hundredth time. No new messages from Elian. “Stop worrying,” Lily said, nudging her with a playful grin. “He’ll be here. Now, let’s go inside before we freeze to death.” The marketing department had barely settled into their rooms when the announcement came for dinner in the grand hall. The event was part farewell party for their retiring Head of Marketing, Mr. Abernathy, and part celebration for Ryan, the newly promoted golden boy. Maeve forced a smile as she slipped into a long-sleeved black dress Lily insisted she wear. Thankfully, the resort’s air conditioning was perfectly set on warm, opposed to the snow-covered land outside. “You look amazing,” Lily whispered as they joined the others in the dining hall. Everyone seemed relaxed, sipping wine and laughing around the candlelit tables. Mr. Abernathy, a kind, grey-haired man who had been with the company for decades, stood at the head of the room, raising a glass. “It’s been a privilege working with all of you. But I’m confident I’m leaving the department in excellent hands. To Ryan!” “To Ryan!” the room echoed, glasses clinking. Maeve’s stomach twisted as she clinked glasses half-heartedly, her eyes flickering to her ex-boyfriend. Dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, Ryan wore his signature modest smile – the one she used to think was charming but now felt insufferable. Standing beside him was Vicky, her diamond necklace catching the light as she looped an arm possessively through Ryan’s. Maeve’s chest tightened. She had caught her boyfriend of three years cheating with their coworker in the office storage room only two days ago. It was a moment that shattered everything, revealing the betrayal that had been hiding in plain sight. “Thank you, everyone,” Ryan began, his voice smooth and practiced. “It’s an honor to follow in Mr. Abernathy’s footsteps. This department is like a family, and I’m grateful to be part of it.” Everyone applauded, but he wasn’t done. Ryan turned to Vicky with a smile so polished it made Maeve’s teeth grind. “Speaking of family…” Maeve gripped her glass tighter, the edges of her vision blurring with anger. The room fell silent as Ryan knelt, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket. Maeve’s breath caught. “Vicky, you’ve been my rock, my partner, and the love of my life. Will you marry me?” A collective gasp filled the hall, followed by another roar of applause as Vicky nodded, her eyes shimmering with tears. Maeve’s nails dug into her palm. She forced herself to smile faintly as colleagues surrounded the couple, offering congratulations. Only Lily, sitting beside her, saw the flicker of pain in Maeve’s expression. “This is why you needed Elian,” Lily muttered, leaning closer. “But don’t worry. When he shows up, Ryan’s going to wish he stayed in accounting.” It was only sweet nothing. An empty assurance from a best friend who wished she could do more than this. But, just as Maeve was about to excuse herself, the dining hall doors opened. Heads turned as a tall figure stepped inside, shaking snowflakes from his tousled dark hair. She recognize that same faint smirk and confident gait from the profilce picture. He was more charming in the flesh, there was no mistaking it. Elian. He wore a perfectly tailored coat over a dark suit, his presence commanding without effort. His sharp features softened with a small smirk as he scanned the room. When his gaze landed on Maeve, he strode forward with the grace of someone used to being the center of attention. Lily leaned in, whispering excitedly, “Holy hell, Maeve. He’s even better in person.” Elian reached their table and offered a warm smile. “Maeve. Sorry to keep you waiting.” Maeve blinked, momentarily stunned as his deep voice drew attention from nearby tables. Heart pounding, she hoped to steady her own voice. “Elian, glad you could make it.” For a moment, it felt like the entire room had frozen, all eyes on them. The look on Ryan’s face when he saw them together –Maeve knew it would be worth it. Without thinking, her voice rang out across the dining hall, sharp and pointed. “Everyone,” she began, the words coming with a hint of rage from Ryan’s utter betrayal. “I’d like to introduce you to my boyfriend, Elian.” The words tasted strange on her tongue, but the satisfaction they brought was instant. A few gasps echoed through the room, and the clinking of glasses faltered for a second. She noticed Vicky’s hand tightening around Ryan’s arm, her gaze darkening as the silence lingered for a beat longer than expected. Maeve’s lips curled into a smile, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “He’s my plus one for the evening, and I’d like to make sure everyone’s okay with that.” She could feel the heat of the moment, her heart racing with a mixture of excitement and sheer pettiness. There was no turning back now, and for the first time in a long while, she allowed herself to enjoy it. Just as she was about to sit down, something utterly unexpected happened. Elian, who had been quietly observing, seemed to make up his mind in an instant. With a fluid motion, he dropped to one knee in front of Maeve, his striking blue eyes locked on hers, a playful yet serious glint in them. Maeve blinked, taken aback as the room went completely silent. Elian reached into his suit’s pocket and pulled out a small, black box. The air around them seemed to still. “Elian, what–” Maeve’s voice faltered, but it was too late. His voice was steady, his gaze never wavering. “Maeve, will you marry me?” Gasps echoed from every corner of the room, followed by another stunned silence. Maeve’s breath caught in her throat, her heart pounding in her ears as the diamond ring glimmered in the candlelight. For a second, Maeve was frozen, her mind racing. ‘Was this real? Was he serious? Wasn’t it too far?’ She glanced around the room, seeing the wide-eyed expressions of her colleagues, most of whom had no idea what was going on – or who Elian even was. But her eyes flicked to Ryan and Vicky, who were now standing completely still, their faces drained of color. Elian’s smirk softened into something warmer as he waited for her response, his hand still holding the ring box, the weight of the moment pressing down on her. Maeve's mind spun, but she couldn’t help the burst of laughter that bubbled up, both from shock and the sheer absurdity of it all. She looked down at Elian, trying to steady her breath as the reality of the moment hit. She just wanted a fake boyfriend to bring on the company’s holiday retreat, but fake fiance? ‘f**k it.” Maeve mentally cursed. ‘f**k you, Ryan.’ Without much thinking, Maeve reached out, her fingers brushing against the cool metal of the ring. The room held its collective breath, and she could feel the weight of all their eyes on her. “You really are full of surprises.” Her voice faltered just slightly, but her smile was steady, and when Elian’s eyes twinkled back at her, she knew there was no going back now. The room erupted in applause, a mixture of shocked gasps and murmurs, but it was Ryan’s face that caught her attention. His expression was a mixture of disbelief and anger, his mouth opening and closing in a way that made her stomach twist with a sense of satisfaction. The room seemed to blur around her as Elian stood, still holding the velvet box in his hand. Before Maeve could speak, he gently took her hand, lifting her fingers to his lips in a soft kiss. Her heart skipped a beat, and to her surprise, the kiss wasn’t just a playful gesture. It was real. Tender, as though they were the only two people in the world. The softness of his lips, the warmth of his touch, melted the cold tension in the air. The kiss was exactly what she needed – an unexpected rush of vindication and satisfaction. When Elian pulled away, she was breathless, caught between amusement and the thrill of the moment. She didn’t care about the onlookers now. In fact, she relished in the attention, the whispers buzzing around them. Her gaze flicked to Ryan once more, and she saw his pale face, still wide-eyed, and slack-jawed. But then, Ryan stammered, his voice trembling as he struggled to form words, “B-boss?!” ‘…huh?’
