CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
LONDON, WEDNESDAY 6 FEBRUARY 1952
A sombre day in London town. Fog dispersed but, in its place, intermittent rain and very cold. Icy. At first, it had seemed like any other dull, cold winter day. Elsie is doing another week of half days at the office in the Strand. She offered immediately when Simpson rang again to say that his new girl was unable to start that week due to family illness and could she possibly..? She could and did, happy to have just one more last week working in the place that has become a sort of second home.
