Brian sits in the reception area at the Southgate Driving Test Centre. He lights a cigarette and smokes it slowly, calmly. If he is feeling agitated, it does not show in his movements and his calm expression. It is cool enough inside the building but rather hot outside. He stubs the cigarette out and gets up and walks down the staircase and out on to the pavement. It shouldn’t be much longer. He walks slowly up to Southgate Underground station, stands in front of the entrance and walks up and down several times.
