CHAPTER THIRTEEN LONDON, SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 16 1944 The sonic boom rips across the sky at nine o’clock in the morning. It sounds as though the sky is tearing the clouds asunder, so loud is the blast and the reverberations. A V2 rocket that moves at up to three times the speed of sound, gives no warning of its approach and explodes immediately on the target, scattering masonry, wood, bodies and blood all over the area. It also leaves a huge crater sitting alongside rows of broken houses. In the distance, the explosion is heard immediately after the sky boom. This is North London, but East London is not far away.
