Episode 2: First Day, First fire

Mira’s heels clicked softly against the polished floor as she stepped into her new reality—her desk just outside the lion’s den. Zayden Cole’s office loomed behind her like a silent storm. Everything felt surreal. The morning had barely begun, and she was already drenched—not from the rain, but from tension. She dropped her suitcase beside the desk and sat down, trying to ignore the glances from passing employees. Were they curious about the new assistant? Or shocked she lasted more than five minutes with him? Leah, the executive assistant Mira had briefly met at reception, stopped by with a sympathetic smile. "You okay?" Mira nodded. “Just… adjusting.” “Don’t worry. He’s always that intense. But he’s fair in his own grumpy billionaire way.” Leah winked, then handed her a tablet. “Here’s your schedule, access codes, and calendar links. He’ll expect updates every hour.” “Every hour?” Mira blinked. “He doesn’t waste time, does he?” “Nope. Zayden Cole eats time for breakfast.” Leah walked away, leaving Mira with her first real challenge: understanding a man who didn’t believe in warm welcomes. Before she could dive in, the intercom buzzed. Zayden’s voice cut through. “Mira, in my office. Now.” Her pulse quickened. She stood, smoothed her skirt, and stepped into his office. He didn’t look up as she entered—just pointed at the chair. “Did you review today’s agenda?” His voice was low but sharp. “Yes,” she said, steadying her voice. “Meeting with Easton Tech at eleven a.m., internal pitch session at two, and a call with the investors at four.” He glanced at her. “And?” “And you have exactly ten minutes before your ride to Easton Tech arrives.” A flicker of approval danced in his eyes—so brief, she almost missed it. “Good,” he said. “You’re coming with me.” She blinked. “I thought the assistants stayed behind—” “Not mine.” He closed his laptop and stood. “You said you wanted a fresh start. Prove it.” Mira didn’t have time to think. One minute she was at her desk; The next, she was in a black SUV beside Zayden, heading into the city with nothing but a tablet, a pen, and pure adrenaline. The car ride was quiet. Mira stole a few glances at him, trying to read what was behind those steel eyes. He was younger than she expected. Handsome, in a frustrating way. But there was something else. Layers. Secrets. Finally, he broke the silence. “Why did you really take this job?” Mira hesitated. “Because I needed it.” “Need is easy. Everyone needs something. What do you want?” She turned to face him. “I want to be seen. Valued. Respected. I want to work somewhere that doesn’t define me by my past.” Zayden didn’t respond. But his jaw tightened slightly. The meeting at Easton Tech flew by in a blur of sharp suits, data charts, and tense negotiations. Mira took notes, watched Zayden command the room, and noticed something no one else did: a hesitation in the lead partner when discussing budget projections. Back in the car, she handed Zayden the notes. “You missed something,” she said. His brow lifted. “Excuse me?” She pointed to a section. “He lied about the numbers. He flinched when they mentioned the third quarter. His tone changed. I don’t think they’re as stable as they claim.” Zayden stared at her for a moment. Then nodded. “Not bad, Mira. You might survive after all.” She looked out the window, hiding a small smile. She didn’t just survive today. She showed up. She paid attention. She earned a sliver of his respect. And somehow, somewhere between the elevator ride and the SUV, she began to feel something unexpected. Maybe… just maybe… she was meant to be here. Not just in this company. But in his world.
