Chapter 32The stone whistled and cracked against the eagle’s breast. He tumbled through the air, then flapped his wings until he righted himself. The blow ought to have shattered his bones, but there were more prayers than ever for him to draw upon, an endless pool from which to drink. He did not need to feel pain. Not anymore. He glared down at the green-cloaked human who had cast the stone, then dismissed him as a target. Why would he waste time cracking apart the soldier’s tough old bones when tenderer marrow awaited him? He just caught sight of a scarlet helmet plume. The prey dismounted and ran into the palace.
