When Evelyn's sweet, coaxing voice drifted through the house, Charlotte wasn't asleep. She was sitting at her desk, quietly drafting divorce papers.
She heard Dominick's voice.
"No. You're pregnant. And... What if Charlotte hears us?"
Evelyn's tone immediately turned sharp.
"Charlotte, Charlotte, Charlotte! Why is she always on your mind? You told me you were physically addicted to me, that you'd go crazy if you went a single day without touching me."
"We did it just two nights ago. What are you afraid of? I'm past the first trimester. The baby is safe! Besides, she took medicine earlier. She won't hear a thing."
The next sounds that reached Charlotte's ears were Dominick's heavy breathing and Evelyn's soft moans.
He closed her eyes and felt the air leave her lungs, slow and silent, until there was nothing left.
'Five years...'
For five years, Dominick had been endlessly attentive to her while giving his passion and desire to another woman.
Then another sentence shattered the last fragile illusion she had clung to.
"Evie... You're incredible. I swear I love this."
Evelyn giggled. "Who do you like more? Me, or Charlotte?"
Dominick laughed breathlessly. "Charlotte just lies there. I've never felt anything like this with her."
Charlotte's eyes snapped open. They were red-rimmed, no tears left, just a hollow, lifeless cold.
A wave of nausea rose in her throat. She bent forward and retched.
In the process, she accidentally knocked a glass off the table.
The glass shattered across the floor. Fragments cut into Charlotte's calf, and blood immediately began to run down her leg.
"What was that?"
Dominick paused. He was about to pull away from Evelyn when she wrapped her arms tightly around his waist.
"Relax. She probably knocked over the bedside glass while dreaming. She hasn't come out all evening. She's definitely still asleep."
Then Evelyn slowly slid down to her knees. She looked up at him.
Dominick stared down at her, his body reacting instantly.
When Evelyn leaned forward and took him into her mouth, he completely stopped thinking about whether Charlotte was awake.
The next afternoon, Charlotte sat at the dining table, eating the meal Dominick had prepared. Everything seemed normal. Until suddenly, red rashes spread across her skin.
Charlotte's eyes flicked toward Evelyn. She caught the faint, vicious smile on Evelyn's face. Charlotte understood immediately. Evelyn had started again.
Dominick rushed over, helped Charlotte onto the sofa, then called 911.
But this time, he didn't force Evelyn to apologize as he had back in high school. Instead, he sighed softly.
"She's been moody since she got pregnant. Just endure it for a few days. Once the baby is born, things will go back to normal."
Two days later, in the study, Evelyn looked around at the walls covered in Charlotte's paintings. Without hesitation, she grabbed a bucket of paint and splashed it across them.
Her eyes burned with jealousy. "Why? I spent my whole childhood studying under famous masters! Why can someone like you, someone who started late, paint better than me?"
She laughed bitterly. "So what if you're talented? Even if I destroy everything you've ever built, there isn't a single soul in this world who will stand up for you!"
She stepped closer to Charlotte.
"My dear sister... Mom and Dad belong to me. Our brothers belong to me."
"And now even your husband, who used to despise me, is mine. You'll never win against me."
Charlotte simply looked at her. She felt nothing. She was leaving soon.
If Evelyn wanted Dominick, she could have him.
That evening at dinner, Evelyn pouted and asked Dominick to feed her. At that moment, Charlotte slid the final page of the divorce agreement in front of him.
"I'm up for promotion to chief physician. I need a family member to sign for me."
Dominick didn't even look carefully. Afraid Evelyn might get upset, he signed quickly.
Charlotte quietly folded the document and put it away.
Over the next few days, Charlotte behaved exactly the same as always. She said very little, until the final day...
She finished packing every last personal belonging.
Just as she was about to leave, her phone screen lit up. It was a promotional post for Evelyn's upcoming solo art exhibition.
Charlotte froze. Her blood ran cold.
Because every single painting displayed under the name Evelyn had been painted by Charlotte herself.
