CHAPTER TWO
DID YOU GET THE JOB?
Naya looks at him, puzzled, but anyway, she has nothing to lose anymore.
“I'm Naya, Naya Sinclair.” She whispered.
‘Naya,’ he repeated almost like the name meant something to him.
She raised a brow noticing how he repeated her name.
Alright, Naya. I believe you’ve had a rough morning; trust me, it's not the end of the day yet. It's possible that something beautiful and better still awaits you at the end of the day. You never can tell, after all, it's not over until it's over.
He looks at her with warmth.
Naya felt every word he uttered down to her bone marrow. She felt for the first time in forever someone really looked at her with warmth, someone noticed she was not okay. She was really grateful. That moment meant a lot to her.
“Thank you so much, sir. I really needed to hear this.” Finally, she was able to smile through the cracks of her tears.
Adrian felt proud of himself, he was glad he could comfort her at the time she needed it the most.
Can you find your way home, or do you need a cab, he asked out of concern.
No don't bother, my puffy eyes can still see clearly, I'm sure it can take me home, she said jokingly.
“Alright then, see you soon Naya Sinclair.”
With that, he walked away.
Naya tries to process what he meant by see you soon, but in the end, she just waved it off.
I am Naya, Naya Sinclair…. I will always find my way back in a big and better way.
She dusts herself, picks up her bag, and walks away.
It was almost 9 p.m when Naya got home, her body heavy with the kind of tiredness that sank through every nook and cranny of her bones, baby-sitting wasn't an easy job, but it was the job that had been paying my bills, I couldn't complain, regardless of the stress I'm was still grateful.
She kicks off her flats, drops her bag on her reading desk, as the bag had offended her, and throws herself on the bed with a long, drained sigh. The mattress welcomed her like an old friend. For a minute, she lay there motionless, letting the peace and quiet of her comfort swallow the noise of the day.
“It's been one hell of a day,” she murmurs.
Suddenly remembering she still has an online job hunting to do, she still has her life to figure out, she rolls to the edge of the bed, reaches for her bag, and picks up her phone.
“Just one quick check,” she murmured, thumb swiping.
Her email loaded
There was a new email.
An email from
VALDOSTA COMPANY _ HUMAN RESOURCES.
Naya’s breath caught.
Her fingers hovered over the screen like she was scared to open the email
Slowly she opened it.
CONFIRMATION OF EMPLOYMENT
Resumption details.
Dear Naya,
We are pleased to inform you that your employment has been approved.
You are to resume tomorrow by 8 a.m on the dot.
Please come along with a valid means of identification and any necessary documents.
Welcome to Valdosta Company.
For a second, her brain couldn't process it.
She read it again, to confirm
Her eyes widened, and she sat up at once, causing her bed to make a creaking sound.
“No,” she whispered with her voice trembling, “No way.”
Her mouth opened, but she couldn't speak; tears formed a pool at the bridge of her eyes. She pinched the bridge of her nose to make sure she wasn't dreaming.
It's a miracle, miracle still happens, I can testify to it. After the lateness, after everything, after sitting hopelessly like a lost child at the garage crying as my world had ended, somehow a miracle still located me.
She said with a shaky voice.
Her heart began to pound loudly, trying to contain her joy.
‘Tomorrow,’..... Tomorrow?
They asked me to resume tomorrow, she shouted joyfully, hugging herself tightly.
For the first time in forever, life didn't feel like it was punishing me.
“Dani, I got it, Dani, I got the job.”
She stared at the email again with shining eyes, there was a breath of hope in her eyes. A huge smile spread across her face.
I need to talk to someone.
I need to tell Dani.
She jumped out of her bed and made her way to the laptop that was lying lazily on the desk.
But something more shocking was waiting for her.
Naya’s hands were still shaking when she opened her laptop.
The screen lit up her face in the dark room, a soft glow that made everything feel unreal.
She clicked on the email again just to be sure.
This time she read it aloud to herself.
I did it, she whispered, eyes burning
At the edge of Dani's email, she saw an unread message notification.
Her eyes flickered in disbelief
Right there at the top of her inbox was another email
A fresh email, from Dani's account
Dani's account?
She asked herself
Naya’s heart stuttered like it forgot how to beat. She stared at the sender's name, frozen, her breath caught in her throat.
Slowly,
So slowly, she clicked it open.
The words from the screen hit her like a whisper from the grave.
“Did you get the job?”
Naya's eyes went blurry, her fingers cold.
Her jaw dropped.
The room suddenly felt small
She hit her chest trying to catch her breath. She suddenly felt suffocated; tightness kept piling in her chest like loads of bricks.
“Dani…?” she calls out as hot tears roll down her cheeks, barely making any sound.
Her eyes flickered over the message like she was searching for something, anything.
Maybe a mistake or a sign that it was a delayed email or something.
But the timestamp was recent.
Too recent.
Her hands trembled as she pulled the laptop closer to her chest, as if nearing the screen could explain something or give her answers.
She stared at the words long and hard till they became blurry due to the pool of tears in her eyes.
A strange feeling crawled all over her.
Her skin filled with goosebumps.
Her lips parted in shock.
“Dani I got it…. I got the job.”
She said aloud like she was waiting for him to respond somehow.
Her eyes drifted all over the room like she was searching him, looking out to see where he was hiding, she was alone, she was all by herself.
But the room didn't answer.
Only the glow in the laptop remained.
Cold and steady she shut the laptop down, then crumbled her way to her bed.
It's nothing….I'm just hallucinating, by morning I will be fine I'm just too excited, she murmured to herself before drifting off to sleep.
