Perspective: Gaia
Location: The Obsidian Palace, Switzerland
My dress was a weapon.
It was made of midnight-blue velvet that hugged every curve of my body, designed to conceal the small but firm bump of my belly. But Julian had insisted on the jewelry—a necklace of heavy, uncut diamonds set in goblin-gold.
"Distraction is a valid tactic," Julian had whispered as he clasped it around my neck.
Now, standing in the Grand Ballroom of the Obsidian Palace, I felt like a planet caught between two suns. Callum stood to my right in a tuxedo that barely contained his shoulders, radiating a heat that kept the room’s chill at bay. Julian was on my left, looking bored and lethal, swirling a glass of champagne he had no intention of drinking.
"They're staring," Callum rumbled, his voice a low vibration against my arm.
"Let them stare," I said, keeping my chin high. "They’re trying to figure out if the rumors are true."
The Twin Heartbeats
The music was a polite, classical drone, but inside me, there was a drum circle.
Being pregnant with a supernatural child was intense. Being pregnant with twins—sired by two different fathers in a single magical event—was a symphony.
I could feel Twin A on the left side of my womb. It felt cold, precise, and ancient. It carried Julian’s essence—the shadow, the hunger, the timelessness.
I could feel Twin B on the right. It was restless, hot, and stormy. It carried Callum’s essence—the thunder, the pack instinct, the raw power.
But binding them together was my essence. The vines of the earth wrapped around them both, feeding them, keeping the Wolf and the Vampire from warring inside me.
"The Council High Elder is approaching," Julian warned, his mental voice sliding into my mind. Be careful, my Queen. He smells of wolfsbane and deceit.
Elder Marius, a man with skin like parchment, bowed low. "Lady Gaia. The Lords Thorne and Vane. We are honored you chose to attend the Winter Gala."
"We enjoy the view," I said smoothly.
Marius’s eyes dropped to my stomach. "We hear whispers, Lady Gaia. Whispers that the Triad has been... fruitful."
The room went silent. The violins stopped. Every ear in the room strained to hear my answer.
"Whispers are for the weak, Marius," Callum growled, stepping forward. "If you have a question, ask it."
Marius smirked. "Very well. Is it true that you carry an abomination? A child of mixed blood that defies the Treaty of Species?"
I felt the babies kick. Both of them. Hard.
A surge of protective rage flooded my system. The velvet of my dress seemed to ripple.
"I do not carry an abomination," I said, my voice amplified by the magic in the room. "I carry the future."
I placed one hand on my belly. I let the glamour drop.
My magic flared. Two spectral vines erupted from the marble floor behind me.
One vine was made of silver ice, blooming with winter roses—Callum’s child.
The other vine was made of black obsidian, blooming with nightshade—Julian’s child.
They twisted together, fusing into a single, radiant tree of green light above my head.
"Twins," a woman in the crowd gasped. "One from the Alpha... one from the Vampire."
Marius took a step back, fear replacing his arrogance. "Two? But... that’s impossible. They will kill each other in the womb!"
"They are brothers," I said, my eyes glowing with the Triad colors—blue, gold, and green. "And they are already stronger than you."
The Assassination Attempt
"Kill her!" Marius shrieked. "Kill the broodmare before they are born!"
Three waiters dropped their trays, pulling silver daggers from their jackets. They were assassins, hidden in plain sight.
Callum roared, shifting into his partial-wolf form in a split second, tearing the throat out of the first attacker.
Julian vanished into smoke, reappearing behind the second assassin and snapping his neck with a casual flick of his wrist.
The third assassin lunged for me.
I didn't move. I didn't need to.
The babies reacted.
A shield of sheer force—a mix of ice and shadow—exploded from my stomach. It hit the assassin like a freight train, blasting him backward through the glass doors and out onto the snowy balcony.
I stood amidst the shattered glass, untouched.
"You wanted to know if they were strong," I said to the terrified room, my hands caressing the bump where my sons lay sleeping. "Now you know."
Callum and Julian flanked me instantly, their eyes wild with murder.
"This Gala is over," Julian announced, his voice echoing with the authority of a king. "And anyone who steps in our way... dies."
