Chapter 1

Growing up as a child and brought up in a home of discipline was tough. I have always felt a burden that I was carrying and wished I was independent. My parents were not the type that would treat you like a princess or anything. They don't spoil us. But discipline us. So I have always waited patiently for the moment I'd be free from what I used to call torture. But as I grew up, I realized it was for our own good. I grew up not changing my motives, but developing them. I realized and understood why my parents overreacted when me or my sister, Dorathy, did something wrong. Cause they wanted us to be good people when we grow up. They aren't bad parents though. I think it's me. Cause they were strict with me & Dorathy when we were growing up and I used to think they were bad parents. I'm glad to see now that they've loosened up a bit. I grew up with my younger sister, Dorathy. Who is 4 years younger than I am. I'm 23 currently. Dorathy just finished high school a year ago and is about to enter college. I finished college this year and graduated from my 5-year course in Nursing. Because of the way our parents cared so much about our future. They did all they could to give us a good formal education and paid tutors for an extra less so we would always be ahead of the class. So, because of that, we aren't just average students but top students, we both compete with other schools in competitions like maths quizzes, debate or something that involves using our brains and we always come out 1st. All thanks to our parents. I'm finally getting the freedom I've always wanted. Cause I've started working and earning a living, which means I don't need to depend on my parents for money and they, seeing we're growing into adults, do all they can to follow what decisions we make and offer advice. We all looked alike, like family, because the resemblance was shown so well. I took after my dad. He has sharp silver-grey piercing eyes and dark curly hair just like me, but mine is much longer and curlier than his. While Dorothy, on the other hand, looks a lot like my mom. They both share the same black wavy hair and light brown eyes. I would like to say we're a pretty good-looking family, because our presence at various places we go to makes people admire us and draws people's attention. Although we looked a lot like each other, we aren't a very close family. We hardly talked to each other because everyone hardly had time for movies, nights, game nights, or anything fun at all. And I didn't like the fact our parents didn't show concern about our social life. So I decided one day I will defy their lame rules and go have fun with my sister. Dorathy and I sneaked out of the house to go watch movies with my best friends. Our parents were busy making business calls, so we assumed they thought we'd be going for tutor lessons. We didn't tell them knowing already that they'd disapprove and say it would distract us from our studies. So we got there when the movie had already started. I sat next to my two best friends, Vivian and Debby. We've known each other for most of our lives. I think most of the reasons are that our parents are business partners. So we all shared the same thing, strict parents, that's what led to the three of us planning this movie day or whatever it's called. The movie was surprisingly interesting and we forgot it was getting late. Seeing it was almost 6:30 pm, Dorathy and I hurried back home hoping our parents wouldn't get mad since we were coming home late. We got home seeing mom and dad looking at us with betrayal. Cause they must have probably found out where we had been too. Since my dad just cut the call on my lesson tutor, he must have figured it out. My sister and I were scared and didn't know what to do since we were caught red-handed. It was the first time we'd sneaked out of the house and we were caught. We were both grounded and they scheduled our tutor lessons in the evening at our house so they would be back by then to make sure we didn't pull up another stunt again or sneak out. The thought of all those moments brings back memories from my childhood and it's finally over completely, since I'm getting married in some month's time. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my back as I saw where I was now. Everything just moved so fast, kinda like my life was fast-tracked. I could even imagine that little girl was planning on getting married. I'm glad that I met the love of my life, Derek. I'm glad that reflecting on my past made me feel like I've grown into an independent lady.
