A Secret Growing

410 Words
The fluorescent lights of the emergency room buzzed like angry hornets. Evelyn sat on the edge of the stiff examination table, clutching a thin paper gown, her knees still scraped from the sidewalk. The city’s chaos felt distant now, muffled behind sterile white walls. A middle-aged doctor entered, with a clipboard in hand, his expression carefully neutral. “Miss Havert,” he said, glancing at her chart. “The test results are back.” Evelyn’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Just tell me it’s food poisoning. Stress. Anything.” The doctor hesitated, then met her eyes. “You’re pregnant. Approximately six weeks.” The world stopped. Pregnant. The word slammed into her like a freight train. Evelyn’s hand flew to her stomach, fingers trembling. “No,” she whispered. “That’s impossible. The contract—” She cut herself off, but the doctor didn’t need the rest. He’d seen enough desperate cases in this city. “The contract explicitly forbade children,” she continued, voice rising. “No heirs. No complications. Daniel made that crystal clear from day one. We were careful.” The doctor sighed. “Sometimes nature has other plans. The nausea, fatigue, and collapse outside the tower… it all fits. Would you like to see the ultrasound?” She nodded numbly. Minutes later, the grainy black-and-white image appeared on the screen. A tiny flicker. A heartbeat. Evelyn stared, tears spilling silently down her cheeks. This wasn’t supposed to happen. The ironclad agreement she’d signed five years ago had been airtight: temporary wife, zero romantic entanglements, absolutely no children. Daniel had insisted on it. An heir would complicate the empire. Complicate everything. And now his child was growing inside the woman he’d discarded without a second glance. The doctor spoke gently. “You have options, of course. But you’re healthy. The baby looks strong so far.” Options. Evelyn’s mind raced. She could disappear. Raise the child far away from Salvador Holdings, from the cold penthouses and ruthless boardrooms. Give her baby a life without contracts, without being a bargaining chip in Daniel’s empire. But as she stared at that tiny heartbeat, something fierce and protective surged through her. This was hers. She placed both hands over her stomach, shielding the secret already taking root. The doctor left to give her a moment. Alone in the quiet room, Evelyn closed her eyes and whispered the truth that would change everything: “I’m carrying Daniel’s baby.”
