Chapter 3

Kael's grip tightened as he guided her up the steps of the old manor, his touch unyielding. Elena's heart thudded louder with every step. The building loomed above them, dark and foreboding, its windows glinting in the dim moonlight like watchful eyes. The air was thick, laced with a strange, earthy scent that reminded her of the forest after a storm-wild, unrestrained, ancient. He led her through the heavy wooden doors, into a grand, dimly lit hall that stretched wide and shadowed, its walls lined with tall, dark portraits and gilded sconces. Elena's gaze darted around, taking in the room's dark elegance, a blend of luxury and something more primal, more dangerous. Her instincts urged her to turn and bolt back through the doors, but she knew there would be no outrunning him. "Welcome to Blackstone Manor," Kael said, his voice echoing softly in the vast hall. He released her hand, and she nearly stumbled, barely catching herself as she straightened and took a step back. "Why am I here?" she demanded, her voice stronger than she felt. He studied her, his expression unreadable. "Because you're mine, Elena. And because it's time you understood that." She shook her head, feeling the frustration and fear bubbling over. "You keep saying that, but I don't understand. I don't know you. I don't know why any of this is happening." "Soon enough, you will," he replied, his voice calm, almost amused. "There's much you don't know. About me... about yourself." He took a step toward her, his gaze so intense it felt as though it pierced straight through her. She swallowed, forcing herself to stand her ground. "I don't need to know anything about you. I just want to go home." Kael's lips twisted into a faint, humorless smile. "Home?" He took another step closer, closing the distance between them, until she could feel the heat radiating from him. "There is no 'home' for you anymore, Elena. This is your home now." Her pulse hammered in her throat, and she clenched her fists, holding his gaze. "I'll never accept that." He reached up, gently tucking a stray strand of her hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering just a moment too long. His touch was soft, deceptively tender, but there was a possessiveness in his eyes that sent a chill down her spine. "Your spirit will only make this more interesting," he murmured, almost as though speaking to himself. "Let me go," she whispered, her voice a plea despite her best efforts. He shook his head slowly. "No. You don't understand yet, but you will. You were meant for this." "Meant for what?" she demanded, her frustration boiling over. "To be kidnapped? To be kept prisoner by some... some monster?" Kael's eyes flashed, and his hand shot out, gripping her chin and forcing her to meet his gaze. The intensity in his eyes was both terrifying and mesmerizing, a storm of fury and something darker, something that made her feel trapped beneath his stare. "Monster?" he echoed, his voice a low growl. "Perhaps. But you, Elena-you were born to be mine. And that bond is something you can't escape, no matter how much you fight it." Her breath caught, her heart pounding against her ribs. There was something in his voice, in the way he looked at her, that sent a shiver down her spine. The certainty in his words, the sheer conviction, left her shaken, as though he truly believed that she belonged to him in some unbreakable, ancient way. "I'll never be yours," she said, her voice a fierce whisper. Kael's lips twisted into a dark smile, his grip loosening just slightly as his fingers brushed her jaw. "We'll see." He released her, stepping back and nodding toward a narrow staircase at the far end of the hall. "Come with me." She didn't move, clenching her fists at her sides. "And if I don't?" Kael arched an eyebrow, a hint of amusement flickering in his eyes. "You don't have a choice, Elena. Not here." She held his gaze for a long moment, resisting the urge to scream, to lash out. But something in his expression, in the way he looked at her as though he could see right through her defiance, left her feeling helpless, cornered. She bit her lip, and after a tense pause, she followed him, her heart sinking with each step. They climbed the staircase in silence, the shadows deepening around them as they ascended. The hallway at the top was dimly lit by a single, flickering light. Doors lined either side, heavy and dark, their frames marked with strange, intricate symbols that seemed to pulse faintly as she passed. Kael stopped in front of a door at the end of the hall and turned to her. "This will be your room." Elena glanced at the door, then back at him, suspicion twisting in her stomach. "So what? You're just going to lock me up here?" He studied her, his gaze unreadable. "You're free to move around the manor as you wish. But know that leaving is not an option." She scoffed, folding her arms over her chest. "And if I try to leave?" His lips curved into that cold smile again. "Then you'll be brought back. No matter how many times you run, you'll always end up here." The finality in his tone sent a chill through her. There was no doubt in his voice, no hint that he expected her to resist. He was certain, as if he'd already won. He pushed the door open and nodded toward it. "Go on." With one last defiant look, she stepped into the room, half-expecting it to be some dark, windowless prison cell. But it was surprisingly elegant-a large four-poster bed dominated the space, draped in rich, dark fabrics, with a small sitting area by the window and shelves lined with books. The door clicked shut behind her, and she turned to find him standing just inside the threshold, watching her with that same intense, predatory gaze. "Get some rest," he said quietly, his eyes lingering on her face. "Tomorrow, we begin." "Begin what?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. He didn't answer. Instead, he gave her one last, lingering look before turning and stepping out of the room, pulling the door shut behind him. She heard the faint sound of a lock clicking into place, and her heart sank. She was alone. Trapped. The silence settled heavily around her, and she sank onto the edge of the bed, her mind racing. She glanced at the window, but a quick inspection revealed heavy bars behind the glass, making escape impossible. The books on the shelves felt like taunts, as if he wanted her to feel comfortable, to settle into this place as though it could ever be a home. But this wasn't her home. It was her prison. And he was her captor. Her mind spun with questions, each one more terrifying than the last. Who was Kael Thorn, really? Why had he taken her, and what did he mean about her belonging to him? Exhaustion finally overtook her, and she lay back on the bed, her gaze fixed on the ceiling, tracing the shadows that danced across it as the night wore on. She didn't know how long she lay there, drifting in and out of uneasy sleep, haunted by Kael's words and the intensity of his gaze. When sleep finally claimed her, it was filled with strange, vivid dreams-of dark forests, of glowing eyes watching her from the shadows, of Kael's face, his expression torn between anger and something else, something she couldn't name. And through it all, she felt a strange pull, a tether that bound her to him, as if some invisible force had woven their fates together in a way she couldn't understand. By the time morning light seeped through the barred window, she knew one thing for certain. Whatever this bond was, it was more than she could fight. And Kael Thorn was far more than just a man.
