CHAPTER 1 {THE CHAOS AND THE DRAMA}

1810 Words
The drama classroom buzzed with anticipation as students settled into their seats, the energy in the room vibrating like an orchestra tuning up before a performance. Ella sat beside Maya in their usual Middle row spot and watched the usual drama class in it's usual chaos— students chatting in clusters, Chairs scrapped against the wooden floor, and the stage sat at the centerpiece of it all, awaiting it's cast. As her eyes travelled around the classroom and the students, they caught the giggles of Cindy and Jenny as they whispered to themselves like they held the secrets of the universe. She sighed and Maya rolled her eyes, "I smell trouble". A statement that showed she too had spotted the duo. "It's always trouble with them". Ella sighed, gripping her notebook tightly. Maya nudged her. "You'd think they would find better hobbies". Ella looked up from the floor where her eyes had rested after unintentionally colliding with Cindy's. "Making my life miserable seems to be their favorite past time." The door opened with a lazy swing, and in walked two boys. The first, with tousled dark hair and a leather jacket slung over one shoulder, carried an air of effortless confidence. His eyes swept the room briefly before he claimed a seat at the back, tossing his jacket over the chair beside him. His companion was almost the complete opposite: relaxed, grinning, and armed with a bag of chips. As he popped on into his mouth, he clapped his friend on the back and muttered something, drawing a smirk. "Fuel for creativity," he said loudly, shaking the bag for emphasis. "Can't have art on an empty stomach." "Who brings snack to drama class?" Maya whispered to Ella raising an eyebrow. Ella shrugged, watching as the boys took their seats. "Someone who clearly doesn't care." Ms Viola burst into the room like a whirlwind of energy, her silk scarf trailing dramatically behind her. "My brilliant stars!" She announced, clapping her hands for silence. "Today we step into destiny's embrace. The casting of our grand production awaits!" Maya rolled her eyes, muttering, "Does she ever turn it off?" Ella stifled a laugh as Ms Viola continued, her voice rising with each word. "This year our story is one of Love, Love, Faith, fate, and the magic of connection. Only the finest performance shall bring it to life!" The boy with the leather jacket leaned back in his chair, a faint smirk in his lips. His friend nudged him with an elbow. "Don't look too much excited man. You might get cast." Ms Viola clapped her hands sharply, pulling everyone's attention to the front. "We shall begin by pairing potential Leads. The heart of our play depends on chemistry — true undeniable chemistry!" Cindy shot her hand up, her polished nails gleaming under the overhead lights. "Ms Viola, what kind of chemistry are you looking for between the leads?" She asked with an exaggerated sweetness that made Maya roll her eyes. The students broke into a quick murmur and fell silent. Ms Viola responded with a flourish. "Chemistry is the essence of the theater! It must burn brightly, like a flame that cannot be extinguished!" One of the guys who had entered lastly before Ms Viola leaned towards his leather jacket friend and muttered, "speaking of flames, Cindy's about to set the place on fire if she doesn't get that role." The leather jacket guy stifled a laugh, earning a glare from Cindy, who has overheard. Jenny nudged her, whispering something that made Cindy's grin return in full force. "Ms Viola," Cindy began again, her tone dripping with false modesty, "Ella should audition. She's got...... Something special, don't you think?" "She's got the authentic charm." Jenny chimed in Ella froze, her cheeks burning as Cindy and Jenny exchanged smug looks. Maya whispered sharply, “She’s baiting you. Don’t let her win.” Ms. Viola tilted her head thoughtfully, her interest clearly piqued. “Ella, yes! A diamond in the rough. Come, my dear, the stage awaits.” Cindy leaned back in her seat, whispering loudly to Jenny, “Hope they reinforced the stage.” Ella’s heart sank, her face flushing with embarrassment. Maya shot up from her seat before Ella could react. “For someone who talks so much, Cindy, you’ve never actually done anything worth noticing. Maybe give that a try.” Cindy’s smirk faltered, but before she could respond, the boy with the chips chimed in, his tone light and teasing. “Hey, maybe Cindy needs fries from Swin’s House — Might help her chill. Best therapy in town." Laughter rippled through the room, diffusing some of the tension. Cindy glared daggers at him, but he just popped another chip into.his mouth, unfazed. Unbothered. Ella hesitated but found herself shepherded to the stage by Ms. Viola, who handed her a script with a flourish. “And for our Romeo…” She turned to the boy in the leather jacket, her eyes gleaming. “You Liam, my dear. Your charm and brooding aura are perfect.” “Destiny,” he muttered, rising to join Ella on the stage. His friend, still munching on chips, called after him, “Don’t blow it, man.” Ella’s nerves prickled as she took her place beside him. Cindy leaned toward Jenny, her voice deliberately loud. “Hope Juliet doesn’t crush Romeo before Act Four.” Ella bit her lip, her confidence waning. Before she could say anything, her stage partner looked directly at Cindy and smirked. “Pretty sure Juliet’s tougher than you, Blondie.” Victor—the boy with the chips—chimed in again, his tone half-serious but humorous. “She’s got this, but Ella, trust me—cardio is king. A treadmill never hurt anyone.” Ella couldn’t help but chuckle, despite the sting of his bluntness. His playful delivery softened the blow, and Maya leaned in from the audience, whispering, “He’s a goof, but at least he’s on your side.” Ms. Viola clapped her hands. “Silence! Begin Act Two, Scene Three—the confession. Feel the emotions, my stars!” Ella took a deep breath, focusing on the script. As they began reading, her voice started shaky but grew stronger with each line. Her partner’s delivery was smooth and confident, creating an unexpected rhythm between them. The room quieted, captivated. When they finished, Ms. Viola practically beamed. “Magnificent! The chemistry! You two are my leads.” A unanimous round of applause followed the exclamation, with yells of Joy filling every corner of the room. Ella blinked, trying to process what just happened. Cindy’s jaw tightened, her lips pressed into a thin line. Jenny whispered furiously in her ear. “And let us not forget Act Four’s climactic kiss,” Ms. Viola declared dramatically. “A moment that defines the entire story!” The boy turned to Ella, his smirk softening into something almost reassuring. “Looks like we’re stuck together, Juliet.” Victor called out from the back, “Plot twist! Juliet saves the play and steals the show. Classic underdog story.” As the class began packing up, Cindy lingered near the door, her glare fixed on Ella. Maya looped her arm through Ella’s, grinning. “You survived. And honestly? You’re gonna kill it.” Victor offered her the chip bag, winking. “Snack therapy. Guaranteed mood booster.” Ella laughed softly, clutching her script. Whatever lay ahead, she knew one thing: the drama was only just beginning. --- Ella walked quickly toward the school’s main gates, her mind spinning. She clutched the edges of her script, replaying the events of drama class like a broken record. Cindy’s comments about her size clung to her like a shadow, no matter how much she tried to shake them off. Even Maya’s reassurances and Victor’s ridiculous chip-filled antics couldn’t completely erase the sting. “Breathe,” Maya said from beside her, as if sensing her thoughts. She slowed her pace, steering Ella toward the shade of a large tree near the parking lot. “You did great in there, by the way. Don’t let Cindy’s garbage get to you.” Ella sighed, leaning against the tree. “It’s hard to ignore when half the class laughed.” “They didn’t laugh at you. They laughed at Victor’s fry joke,” Maya pointed out, folding her arms. “And let’s be real, the guy’s got a talent for stealing the spotlight.” As if summoned by her words, Victor appeared with Liam, both strolling across the lawn as though they had all the time in the world. Liam had his leather jacket slung over one shoulder, looking as casual as ever, while Victor munched on what appeared to be a second bag of chips. “What, no standing ovation for Juliet?” Victor called out, grinning. “I thought I had a good punchline back there. Guess not everyone’s a fan of my fry-inspired comedy.” Ella rolled her eyes, though a small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. “Thanks for the defense, I guess.” Liam smirked, stopping a few feet away. “Don’t mention it, Juliet. And seriously, ignore Cindy. She’s all talk.” Victor stepped closer, offering her the bag of chips. “Snack therapy. Works wonders for stage fright, villain taunts, and existential crises.” Ella shook her head, but Maya snatched a chip with a mock glare. “You’re going to bankrupt yourself buying these, you know.” Victor shrugged dramatically. “It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.” Liam chuckled, his attention drifting to Ella. “You held your own in there. Better than most first-timers.” Ella flushed under his gaze, unsure how to respond. Was that a compliment? Coming from Liam, she couldn’t tell if he was serious or just being polite. Before she could figure it out, the screech of tires pulled their attention toward the parking lot. Cindy’s sleek black car sped past them, her expression unreadable but her knuckles white against the steering wheel. Jenny waved at them awkwardly from the passenger seat as the car disappeared down the street. Maya snorted. “She’s probably off to scheme her next attack. You should be flattered, Ella. It takes a lot to get under Cindy’s skin.” Ella groaned. “That’s exactly what I want—her undivided attention.” “Good news is you’ve got us,” Victor said, throwing his arm around Liam’s shoulder. “A rebel, a comic genius, and—” He gestured at Maya with a flourish. “—a relentless protector.” Maya raised an eyebrow. “You’re ridiculous.” Victor grinned. “Yeah, but you love it.” Ella couldn’t help but laugh, some of the weight on her shoulders lifting. Maybe she wasn’t alone in this after all.
