CHAPTER 15: THE RUMOR MASTER 🇹🇱💳

922 Words
The rain had stopped by the time Ethan, Sophie, and Jemimah arrived at Evercrest Academy the next morning. The message from the previous night echoed in their minds. No one spoke as they walked towards the old auditorium. The main door stood slightly open. "This is it," Ethan said quietly. Sophie nodded. "We finish this today." The three stepped inside. The dusty hall was empty. For a moment, nothing happened. Then a voice broke the silence. "I was wondering when you'd arrive." The friends turned sharply. Standing near the stage was the school librarian. Jemimah frowned. "You?" The librarian sighed. "I suppose you've guessed by now that I know more than I've admitted." She slowly walked towards them. "The files... the newspaper... the photograph... I left them where you could find them." "Why?" Sophie asked. "Because I wanted someone to finish what was started years ago." The librarian reached into her handbag and placed an old diary on a table. "It belonged to the student whose life was destroyed by the rumours." Ethan opened it carefully. Inside were handwritten entries describing anonymous letters, false accusations, lost friendships and the pain of being judged without evidence. "The investigation ended," the librarian said softly, "but the truth was never found." Jemimah looked up. "So... are you the Rumor Master?" The librarian shook her head. "No." "I've spent years trying to discover who was responsible, but found no one." The old auditorium was silent. Then, slow footsteps echoed from behind the stage. A student walked into the light. It was NATHAN REED. Sophie frowned in confusion. "Nathan?" Jemimah's eyes widened. "You've been behind all of this?" Nathan gave a small, bitter smile. "I knew none of you would suspect me." Ethan stepped forward. "Why, Nathan? Why did you spread the rumours?" Nathan looked around the empty auditorium before answering. "Five years ago, my older sibling was a student at Evercrest Academy." He paused. "They were one of the brightest students in the school. Then someone started spreading lies about them. They were accused of cheating and things they never did." "My sibling kept saying they were innocent, but no one listened. Friends abandoned them. Teachers doubted them. They eventually left the school with their reputation destroyed." Sophie lowered her head. "The student in the newspaper." Nathan nodded. "That was my sibling." Jemimah looked shocked. "So everything... the anonymous notes, Locker 27, the missing files..." "I planned all of it," Nathan admitted quietly. "I wanted everyone to see how easy it is to believe rumours without asking for the truth." "When Ethan arrived, people judged him before they even spoke to him. I realised he was the perfect target because the rumours about him spread on their own." Ethan stared at him. "So you used me to prove your point." Nathan looked away. "Yes." At that moment, the auditorium doors opened. The principal, Mrs. Wilson, the vice-principal walked inside. The librarian had secretly informed them to come. "We heard everything," the principal said. The student closed their eyes. "There isn't anything left to hide." The diary, the flash drive, the old newspaper articles and the anonymous notes were handed over to the teachers. "I'm tired of hiding," Nathan said softly. The principal sighed. "What happened to your sibling was deeply unfair. But hurting innocent people was never the answer." Nathan nodded with tears in his eyes. "I know." A week later, the principal called a special assembly. Students filled the assembly ground whispering as usual. But this time, the whispers stopped when the principal stepped forward with Nathan. "For weeks," he began, "many of us believed without asking whether they were true or false." He paused. "In doing so, we hurt innocent people." The principal turned towards Nathan. The entire assembly became silent, ready to hear what Nathan had to say. "I thought I was fighting for my sibling. Instead, I became the same kind of person who hurt them." Nathan paused. "I sincerely apologize to Ethan for spreading rumours about him, and I want you all to stop the false accusations and make friends with him. I'm truly sorry." He sobbed. Then the principal told the students: "Let that be a lesson to everyone. A rumour may begin with a few words, but it can destroy someone's future. Always seek the truth before believing what you hear." He said. The principal announced that Ethan had been cleared of every false accusation. The principal continued. "From today, we will not allow anonymous rumours to decide how we treat one another. We must seek the truth before passing judgement." The students applauded. As the assembly ended, Sophie, Ethan and Jemimah walked slowly across the school courtyard. "It feels strange," Jemimah admitted. "No more mysterious notes." "No more anonymous messages," Sophie added. Ethan smiled. "No more running through empty hallways after class." The three friends laughed. They stopped beneath the old mango tree where so many of their conversations had begun. "This place feels different now," Sophie said. "It does," Ethan replied. Jemimah folded her arms with a grin. "So... what do we do now?" Ethan looked across the busy school compound. "We move forward." The morning bell rang. Students hurried towards their classrooms. This time, no whispers followed Ethan. Only greetings. As the three friends walked side by side towards their class, sunlight broke through the clouds, shining over Evercrest Academy. The rumours had finally ended. But the lesson they left behind would never be forgotten. Some rumours fade with time. The truth lasts forever ....THE END....
