CHAPTER 8

422 Words
The house was empty when she walked in. Wondering where Jason had gone to, she made her way to the bedside drawer. She noted how fast the day was and thought back to what the housekeeper had said. It didn’t faze her one bit, but she wondered why even a high-rise building was not safe enough. Giving a long and bored sigh, she walked into the bathroom and stood in front of the bathroom mirror. She studied her reflection and thought she looked a bit rusty. “The price you pay for being too smart” She smiled, but it was a different kind, no light or kindness in her eyes, they looked amused for some reason but with a spark of menace. Walking back to the bedroom, she looked around for her phone and found it in one of the drawers. Picking up her earpieces, she walked back to the bathroom and turned on a video. She seemed to be concentrating on it as she mimicked what was happening in the video. After 30 minutes of practice, she turned it off, took out her earpieces and looked intently in the mirror. She seemed distant, as if she was deep in thoughts. A bath. She took of her clothes and stood in the shower. Wondering what that old man was doing. She smiled. But she had greater problems. Where did her husband go? The bad man would come for him if he wasn’t careful. He seemed worried this morning. She wondered what she had possibly said to make him so concerned. She had to be careful. She changed her mind when she went for a walk. She was not going to give him a reason to judge her. It was best he remained in the dark, and she was capable of making sure that would happen. She just hoped he wouldn’t get too interested and decided to snoop around, then it would be a problem, and she was not going to like it. Stepping out of the shower, she dried her body and walked to the bedroom, putting on a t-shirt and shorts she figured to appease her husband by cooking. “What was his favorite dish again?”. She looked genuinely confused and thought about calling him, but decided against it. She was supposed to know him enough. She decided to prepare whatever came to her mind and come up with something soothing to say if the need arises. “The price I pay for being too smart”.
