Chapter 2: The Gilded Cage

567 Words
The drive to the Vane Estate was a suffocating silence. Elara stared out the window of the black Maybach, watching the city lights fade into the dark, towering iron gates of the countryside. Beside her, Julian didn’t say a word. He didn't have to. His presence filled the car like a storm cloud, heavy and electric. He was busy on his tablet, his sharp profile illuminated by the blue light of the screen. He looked like a king checking his conquest. "Where are we going?" Elara finally whispered, her voice trembling. "The contract said a private residence. It didn't say I’d be taken out of the city." Julian didn't look up. His thumb swiped across the screen with a lethal grace. "My residence, my rules, Elara. You signed the papers. You belong to the estate now." "I am a surrogate, Julian. Not a prisoner." Finally, he turned. His icy blue eyes raked over her, from her messy ponytail down to her faded thrift-store coat. A smirk tugged at the corner of his cruel, perfect mouth. "In my world, there is very little difference." The car pulled up to a massive, modern mansion of glass and black stone. It looked less like a home and more like a fortress. As the door was opened by a silent chauffeur, Julian stepped out and waited for her. "Inside," he commanded. Elara stepped into the foyer. It was breathtakingly cold. White marble, vaulted ceilings, and not a single family photo in sight. "This will be your home for the next nine months," Julian said, walking toward a grand staircase. "Section A of the contract: You are not to leave the grounds without my express permission. Section B: Your phone will be handed over to my security team tonight. I will provide you with a secure line for your sister’s doctors, and nothing else." Elara’s breath hitched. "No phone? Julian, that’s—" "That’s for the protection of my heir," he snapped, turning to face her. He was suddenly inches away, his shadow swallowing her. "The world thinks the Vances are extinct. If the press finds out a disgraced socialite is carrying a Vane child, the scandal would be... messy. And I don't do messy." He reached out, his fingers grazing the collar of her coat. Elara flinched, but he didn't pull away. Instead, his hand drifted up, his knuckles brushing against the sensitive skin of her neck. "You look thin," he murmured, his voice losing its edge and becoming something much more dangerous. "Fragile. I can't have a fragile mother for my child." "Is that all I am to you?" Elara spat, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. "An incubator? A way to finally win your war against my father?" Julian leaned down, his lips inches from hers. She could smell the expensive bourbon and mint on his breath. For a second, the hatred in the room shifted into something else—a spark of raw, terrifying chemistry. "Your father is already defeated, Elara," he whispered. "This isn't about him anymore. This is about us." He pulled back abruptly, his face returning to a mask of stone. "Mrs. Halloway will show you to your room. Dinner is at eight. Don't be late. I hate to be kept waiting." He turned and disappeared into the shadows of the upper hallway, leaving Elara standing alone in the middle of the silent, beautiful prison.
