Jean's POV
The week had run so fast and so did the weekend. It was Monday again and I was getting prepared for work. I searched around my messy room for my curling iron but it was nowhere to be found. Figuring that my best friend, Riley, had borrowed it, I headed for her room and walked into it without knocking. She was seated in front of her laptop, cross legged on her bed and she raised her gaze to look at me as I hurried in. I was running late.
"Did you take my curling iron?" I asked her, already searching through her dresser and the drawer of her vanity desk.
"And what happened to knocking and asking for permission before barging into my room?" Her tone sounded tired of me but I couldn't care less. I had to fix my hair and leave for work real quick or Mrs. Hathaway would make my life a living hell.
"Where is it?"
With a tired sigh, she pointed to her closet and I quickly opened it. I sighed in relief to see the curling iron staring face to face at me and without further delay, I picked it up and started working on my hair in front of the mirror.
"Did you oversleep again?" Riley watched me from the mirror. Her blonde hair was tied in a high, messy ponytail and her large glasses were resting on the bridge of her nose. If anyone thought of me as a nerd, then Riley was a higher version of my nerdy self.
"Sort of." I replied. It was in my habit to sleep off an alarm and today was no exception. "What are you doing anyway? Let me guess. You're still applying for a job at that law firm, aren't you?"
Riley nodded at me and with a tired sigh, she collapsed on the bed and stared at the ceilings.
"This has to be the hundredth time I've been applying there. I really hope I get accepted this time."
"I hope you do too." Like a vile, the lie tasted bitter in my mouth. Deep down in my heart, I knew that I did not want Riley to get the job because I knew that when she eventually does, we would finally get seperated for a really long time. For almost a year now, she had been applying for a job at a top renowned law firm in London, hoping to get accepted, only to end up disappointed. Even though I wanted the best for Riley, I knew that I would be terrified to be seperated from her for a long time. Riley and I had been friends since high school and we had applied to the same law school but after I had made the mistake of getting pregnant for a total stranger, I was forced to drop out of school. Still, Riley has stuck with me ever since and after she had graduated law school, we rented this apartment together and lived together as roommates. She had always been my one and only friend and I had a feeling that I would die if she ever had to travel somewhere far for work.
"Anyway, did he contact you again?" Fortunately, she changed the topic.
"Who?" I angled my head to confirm if the style was fitting and I smiled in self satisfaction at the bouncy curls of my dark hair.
"You know, the mafia guy." Her tone sounded teasing now and I rolled my eyes at her, turning my head to face her this time.
"I don't think he ever would."
"I think you should consider giving his offer a chance if he happens to approach you again." She sat back up on the bed. "Getting on Dante Perez's good side could change our lives forever."
"That's total bullshit, Riley." I turned around completely to face her. "Plus, he is a horrible father. He doesn't even care to listen about how much of a wreck his daughter is."
Riley laughed at my complaint.
"Come on, Jean. Don't be so harsh on the little girl. Moreover, she is your look alike. Much like a younger version of yourself. The only difference is that you were a total nerd and a boring kid when you were her age."
It was my turn to laugh this time. "Are you seriously calling me a nerd? If there was an award for the nerdiest nerd in high school, you would have won the queen of all nerds. Now, excuse me, I have to head for work."
"You f*****g b***h!" She laughed and threw her pillow at me. I laughed as it hit me and threw the pillow back at her. She shrieked and more laughter filled the air.
"Let me drive your car to work, since you'll be indoors all day. See you when I get back."
"Alright, girly. Have fun." She blew me a kiss and I did the same before hurrying back to my room, picking my handbag and quickening my pace out of the apartment. I reached the garage and reached for my handbag to retrieve the car key.
"Damnit. Did I forget to take it?" I cussed at myself as my fingers shuffled through the insides of my bag and I sighed in relief as I felt the keys. "Oh, thank goodness."
I retrieved the car key and just as I was about to press the key and open the car door, I felt a strong masculine hand circle around my neck and a small, white handkerchief covering my nose. My heart skipped and my eyes shot open in panic. My first instinct was to scream, punch, pinch, kick and try to escape from whoever this person was, but as I tried to fight off his arm that held me steady, I felt a strong wave of sleepiness hit me no matter how hard I tried to fight it. Realizing that the handkerchief contained sleeping sedatives, I screamed into the handkerchief again for help but it was only a muffled sound and then, my vision turned black.
And I passed out.
