"M-mom.. Are you fighting with dad?" I asked in a low tone. I heard them shouting with each other.
She kneeled in front of me and gave me a hug. " No sweetie. Something just came up." I may be 10 years old but I can hear the worry in her voice.
"It's okay, mom! Everything's gonna be alright!" I flashed my toothless smile that made her giggle.
"Now honey, I need to give you this important thing." She stood up and led me to a secret door near the hall.
I followed her for about 5 minutes before we reach our destination. It was a quite small room full of antique jars and vintage painting displaying on the beige wall. Near the window is a baroque styled wardrobe with human sized mirror on it.
"Is this a new room, mom? Why I haven't seen this?" I ask curiously, checking out the whole room.
"For emergency use only. " Her long wavy black hair was swaying as she walked towards the wardrobe. Emergency? Does it exist in a vampire dictionary? It's not like we're gonna be extinct tomorrow. Or so I thought.
I saw her getting an small box inside. "What's that?" My curiosity was eating me. "An heirloom." She answered me without having a glance.
"Heirloom?" I stood beside her. She handed it to me. "Open it." I do as I told. I saw an old necklace with a yellow gold Victorian pearl amethyst pendant on it.
"My mom gave it to me when I was on your age."
"Why?"
"Will you let me finish first?"
I pouted. "Okaaay!"
"This is for protection and I will give this to you."
"M-mom you're scaring me." I said shakily. She holds my hand, the once cold touch was becoming colder.
"Always remember that Mommy and Daddy loves you, okay?" She held me in a tight embrace. "If you wear this necklace, it will hide your vampire scent and will make you a human. Never lose this."
I started to cry. "Tell me what's happening!"
"You'll gonna understand it someday, Esmeralda." Mom said. She quickly got up. "Th-they are h-here." I could feel the terror in her body.
"Esme baby, I need you to stay here. Don't leave unless the snow will start to fall. I w-want you to run as fast as you can, n-never look back." She started to tear up.
"M-mom.." I called her out as she walked away. "Be safe and alive, baby." That's the last word I heard from her before she left me clueless inside that unfamiliar room.
