Present Time
Those memories.. 10 years had passed and it is still haunting me every time. After that night, I ran away until my feet bled. A human lady found me lying on the snow and took me home. Aura Griamore, who has 2 children, Amanda and Amber, and a loving husband, Arnaldo, fed and dressed me like her own.
From that moment, I decided to forget who Esmeralda Verruca was and started to live as Astrid Griamore. For safety purposes. Humans didn't know that we exist.
I manage to be alive and lived with the humans for the past years. Thanks to the pendant that my Mom gave me. It hid my scent and it's keeping my blood lust at bay. Drinking animal blood gives me energy and quench my thirst but Human blood gives me life. Though, I only drink human blood twice a month.
A knock on the door reminded me that I wasn't alone in the house. I tied my long wavy light auburn hair before facing the person.
"Oh, hi, Mimi!" I gave her a bear hug.
" Astrid, dear, are you sure that you'll not be going?" Mom's voice was heavily laced with concern. They will gonna go for a week summer vacation in Magnolia with the whole gang. But I decided not join them because lately I've been feeling extra tired and my body's getting weak. My last hunt was 2 months ago and I need to find a new prey this evening. Our place is 30 minutes away from the forest so it was safe to hunt for foods. That's why I decided to play "sick" for awhile.
"I w-would love to but my body's still feeling heavy." I lowered my voice. Pouting my lips and batting my eyelashes will convince her.
"Astrid, Aura! Let's get going! It's already 10 in the morning!" Pops is shouting downstairs.
"Such an impatient man." She grinned. "Call us if anything happened okay? And get your strength back."
"I will, Mom. Don't mind me. Just enjoy your vacation and have fun." I smiled at her. "Tell Amanda and Amber that I put it inside the yellow bag. Now go! The old man is having an internal battle whether he'll drag us down or he will just wait." She gave me a kiss on the cheeks before going down.
I went out in the balcony to see them off and waited for the car to be swallowed by the horizon. I closed the curtains and let myself dive in the comforts of my bed. This week is gonna be a hunting feast.
It was not until my cellphone rang that I woke up. I opened it to see who called. It's already 10 in the evening and Mom must be worried cause I'm not answering her calls. I sent her a text that I just woke up and no need to worry about me. I jumped out of bed and went to the balcony.
The moon is gracefully glowing as if it's inviting me to join the trees dancing under its moonlight. It's been so long since the last time I hunt and I miss the thrill of being the predator. After all, I have the beast inside me.
