We grab our things and head to our next class: French. We head in and I find out we keep the same seating pattern in all classes so I am always with Jackson & co. This day just keeps getting better!
The teacher introduces herself as Séverine Dupontel. She has a quiet voice and the class seems to hush in order to hear her. It is also her first day at Witchigan High. We ask her a few questions in our best French.
She is from France and has come to the States to discover more of the world. She seems so quiet and gentle but she has a certain aura to her. It's actually quite confusing.
After having interrogated her with our basic French, we are then instructed to test our introduction vocabulary in pairs. I turn to Jackson:
"Comment t'appelles-tu ?"
"Je m'appelle Jackson Grey. Comment t'appelles-tu ?"
That was sexy!
"Je m'appelle Maisie Boston. Quelle est ta couleur préférée ?"
"J'aime le vert." He said his favourite colour was green while gazing into my green eyes with a seductive smile. Or was I imagining things?
We carried on with the questions. I found out that he too was 17, that he lived in a small village outside Witchigan, with Kyle and Alison and that he loved pizza and pancakes. That was pretty much the extent of my knowledge of French so I couldn't prod him further. Like... Does he have a girlfriend? Does he mind me drooling over him? Could I possibly throw myself at him and snog him as if my life depended on it in the middle of the classroom? And other important questions! Oh well, I'll save them for later.
At the break, Jackson shows me where the senior lockers are and says we must stop by the reception desk at lunch, to know where to put my stuff. In the meantime, he offers for me to share his locker. Oh my gosh, he is so kind, and sweet, and gorgeous, and caring, and... Stop! I'm gushing internally again. I bet he can see it on my face.
Kyle and Alison tag along and seem quite deep in thought, watching Jackson. Maybe they're gushing too, haha.
Jackson asks me more questions about what I like to do, what my previous schools were like. All of a sudden, a blonde girl comes running up and leans into him with an unnaturally big smile "Hey boo! I've been looking for you? Who's the new face?"
"I'm Maisie." I say. I'm feeling a little bummed. This chick is clearly all up in his space like she owns the place. And she's letting me know. s**t, I have only known of Jackson's existence for a few hours and I am already feeling the loss of something I never had.
"I'm Rosie!" she gushes. Fake, fake, fake! "I'm head cheerleader, you should totally try out for the team. Tryouts are on Wednesday at 3:30pm."
I muster up a half-smile while thinking there is absolutely no way I would turn up at her tryouts. I like to keep a low profile, not throw myself under the spotlight. I cringe internally at all the ways I could make a fool of myself in public, in front of Jackson... And I already know Rosie would love it.
She plants a kiss on Jackson's cheek and skips off to a group of girls who seem to just flap their arms around and screech. I notice Alison roll her eyes and glance at Kyle. There is an awkward silence.
"That was one bubbly cheerleader", I say and Alison and Kyle grin. I decide to engage in conversation with them as I had pretty much only spoken with Jackson so far, in my little dream world. But Rosie's intervention had put a dampener on that. She is like a little ray of sunshine with her blonde, bouncy hair, her rosie cheeks, her toned cheerleader body, well flaunted in a flattering, tight, black halter top, a beige mini skirt and white pumps.
I feel I could possibly be purposefully turning my back on Jackson. Like I was mad with him, like he had done something wrong. I know that's not exactly fair but the emotions I am trying to keep a handle on right now are pretty strong.
"So, are you guys like childhood friends then?", I ask.
"Yeah!" said Kyle, "We've known each other since we were pups".
I look at him, puzzled. "What are you, like, dogs?" I laugh.
They exchange a look and laugh too. Jackson seems deep in thought.
"So, Maisie... Will you be attending Rosie's super cool, awesome, amazing tryouts?" teases Kyle.
I snort. "Nope, that will not be happening! I'm just not the bubbly type." I smile.
I notice that Alison doesn't talk much. She doesn't seem unfriendly, however. Just quiet. I can't tell what she thinks about me. Kyle is super friendly and I thought Jackson was pretty interested in me, possibly flirting... But now Rosie has marked her territory, I think I must have misread the signs. More fool me.
I don't really see the day go by. The teachers are all pretty friendly. The school is big but it has felt good having a group of friends to go round with. I feel quite at ease with them and it feels natural to chat and joke around. I would like for this to go on, to build friendships that would last beyond simply showing me the ropes. Of course, there is this crazy pull that I feel towards Jackson but I make sure I keep a bit more distance between us the rest of the day.
Lessons are now over. It's time to get my stuff from Jackson's locker. I'm going to have my own tomorrow. That kind of sucks.
Oh, here comes bouncy Rosie with her beautiful blondness. She presses her body against Jackson and he seems uncomfortable and gently moves away. Rosie's keen eyes go from him to me and back to him.
"Jackson, honey, are you coming to the lake?"
Jackson looks at me: "We sometimes go to the lake after school to play volleyball or just hang out. Do you want to come?"
"Oh, thanks, but I'm going to head home now and let all this new information settle."
I pick up my bag and go to shut Jackson's locker door, just as he is putting his hand up to do the same thing. We touch and I almost gasp from the warmth and tingles I feel where our skin is in contact. I pull my hand away and rush off before the shock and the red cheeks are visible to all.
I throw a quick "Goodby everyone" over my shoulder and all 4 of them are staring at me! Jackson looks intense, Kyle and Alison look curious and Rosie looks foul! Ouch, I didn't mean to make an enemy on my first day but I. feel quite prepared to fight her for Jackson. Oh my gosh, I have never thought like this before. I don't know what has got into me but I am feeling fierce and protective as f**k!
