_Day 8. 6:00 AM. Penthouse._ Lilycouldn't sleep again. The photo was burned into her brain. Damian. Sophia. 3 years ago. Tangled sheets. His face turned away. She heard Damian in the kitchen. No coffee smell. Just the quiet clink of a mug. When she walked out, he was sitting on the floor. Back against the cabinets. Two cold coffees. "You didn’t sleep," he said. "Neither did you." Lily sat across from him. Not next to. "The photo." "I know." Damian didn’t look at her. "It’s real, Lily. I’m not going to lie to you about it." "Did you love her?" Damian flinched. "No. I was 26 and lonely and my dad just died. Sophia was... there. It was two weeks of bad decisions." Lily picked up her coffee. Didn’t drink. "The board votes in 46 hours." "I know." "And your mom has a forged signature." "I know." Lily finally looked at him. "So what’s the plan, Damian?" Before he could answer, his phone buzzed. _Unknown: Breakfast. The Plaza. 8 AM. Come alone. - S_ Damian showed her. "Sophia." Lily stood. "Then we’re going." "She said alone." "Rule 1, remember? No secrets." Lily grabbed her bag. "I’m coming." --- _Day 8. 8:15 AM. The Plaza Hotel._ Sophia was already there. White dress. Again. Sunglasses. A manila folder on the table. She smiled when she saw them both. "Oh. You brought your contract bride. Cute." "Sit," Damian said. Sophia sipped her mimosa. "I was hoping for alone time, Damian. But fine. Group therapy." Lily sat across from her. "What do you want?" "I want," Sophia said, sliding the folder across the table, "to save you the embarrassment." Lily opened it. Photos. Dozens. Damian and Sophia at a gala. Damian’s hand on Sophia’s back. Damian and Sophia on a yacht. Damian and Sophia in that hotel. Different angles. Different nights. The last photo made Lily’s stomach drop. A legal document. _Marriage License Application. Damian Hart + Sophia Monroe._ Dated 3 years ago. Never filed. "See?" Sophia leaned forward. "We were serious. We filled this out. We picked venues. Then he got cold feet because his daddy died and he had to be CEO." Damian didn’t touch the folder. "We never filed it, Sophia." "Doesn’t matter." Sophia smiled at Lily. "According to your precious prenup, reconciliation is reconciliation. And we reconciled for 2 weeks. Hotel receipts prove it." Lily closed the folder. "Why are you showing me this?" "Because Eleanor asked me to." Sophia shrugged. "She wants you gone before the board vote. She thinks you’re bad for the company image. Contract bride? Please." Damian’s jaw ticked. "My mother put you up to this." "She didn’t have to." Sophia looked at Damian. "I want what’s mine, Damian. Hart Enterprises. And I’ll get it. Either you marry me, or I take you to court with this." She tapped the folder. "Joint assets. 50%. Starting 3 years ago." Lily felt numb. "How much is that?" "About $4 billion," Sophia said sweetly. Lily stood. "We’re done here." "Lily—" Damian started. "Outside. Now." --- _Day 8. 8:40 AM. Car._ Lily stared out the window. "Say something," Damian said. "What do you want me to say?" Lily’s voice was flat. "Congrats? You almost married her?" "I didn’t marry her." "But you wanted to." Damian pulled over. "Lily. Look at me." She didn’t. "Lily." He reached for her hand. She let him take it. "It was 3 years ago. I was a mess. I thought marrying Sophia would make the grief stop. It didn’t. The day we were supposed to file, I walked out." "Why?" "Because I realized I didn’t love her. I loved the idea of not being alone." Damian squeezed her hand. "With you, it’s different." Lily pulled her hand back. "Is it? Because right now it feels like I’m the rebound that got a contract." Damian cursed. "You’re not a rebound. You’re the only real thing in my life right now." Lily laughed. No humor. "Then prove it." "How?" "Help me burn that folder." --- _Day 8. 12:00 PM. Hart Tower. Legal._ Adesina looked at the photos. Her face didn’t change. "This is bad," she said. "If Sophia files suit, she can tie up Hart Enterprises for years." "Can we prove the signature is forged?" Damian asked. "Yes. But it takes time. We don’t have 48 hours." Adesina looked at Lily. "There’s one other option." "What?" Lily asked. "You countersue. For defamation. For harassment." Adesina leaned forward. "And you make it public before Sophia does." Lily blinked. "You want me to go public?" "I want," Adesina said, "the narrative to be _Billionaire CEO fights to protect wife from ex_ instead of _Billionaire CEO hides ex and prenup._" Damian looked at Lily. "It’s your choice. I won’t force you." Lily thought of the texts. The brunch. The photo. Sophia’s smile. "Fine," she said. "Let’s burn it down." --- _Day 8. 6:00 PM. Press Conference._ Hart Tower. Cameras. Reporters. Damian stood at the podium. Lily next to him. No ring. No smile. Just truth. "3 years ago," Damian started, "I made mistakes. I dated my ex, Sophia Monroe. We considered marriage. We did not get married." Murmurs. "A prenup was drafted. I never signed it. Someone forged my signature. We have filed an affidavit and are pursuing legal action." Cameras flashed. "This woman," Damian put his hand on Lily’s back, "is my wife. We have a contract. But what we have is real. And I will not let my mother or my ex destroy her to gain control of my company." Lily stepped to the mic. "I’m Lily Carter. I’m not here for money. I’m here because I chose him. And I’m not leaving." Silence. Then chaos. --- _Day 8. 9:00 PM. "Then we prove it is." "How?" Damian looked at her. "We stop pretending." Lily’s breath caught. "What does that mean?" "It means," Damian stood and held out his hand, "we spend the night together. For real. So tomorrow, when they ask, we don’t have to lie." Lily stared at his hand. Day 8 of 90. And she wanted to say yes for the first time. _TO BE CONTINUED...
