Chapter 1: The Reunion Celestine Valeria stepped into the towering glass building of Westbridge Corporation, her heels clicking softly against the marble floors. The air smelled of freshly brewed coffee and polished wood, a scent both professional and familiar. She gripped the strap of her bag, steadying herself as the reality of where she was—and more importantly, who she was about to see—settled in. It had been five years since she had last seen Isaac Blackwood, the man who had once been her best friend, her greatest love, and, ultimately, her most painful heartbreak. Now, he was her boss. She inhaled deeply, pushing away the memories that threatened to resurface. This was just a job. Nothing more. “Ms. Valeria?” The receptionist, a well-dressed woman with a kind smile, looked up from her desk. “Mr. Blackwood is expecting you. His office is on the top floor.” “Thank you.” Celestine stepped into the elevator, her reflection staring back at her in the polished steel doors. She had worked tirelessly to get where she was, climbing the corporate ladder with discipline and grace. She wasn’t that naive young woman anymore. She had moved on. Or at least, she thought she had. The elevator chimed, the doors sliding open to reveal a sleek, modern office space. A large window overlooked the city, bathing the room in warm, golden light. And there he was. Isaac Blackwood stood by his desk, his tall frame poised with quiet confidence. He had changed, yet somehow remained the same. His sharp features had matured, his presence commanding as ever. He wore a crisp black suit, the top button of his shirt undone, exuding effortless authority. His dark eyes met hers. For a fleeting moment, the years between them disappeared. Then, he spoke. “Celestine.” His voice was steady, controlled, yet there was something beneath it—a hesitation, a recognition. “Mr. Blackwood.” She met his gaze with the same composed professionalism, refusing to let her emotions betray her. A flicker of amusement crossed his face at her formality, but he didn’t comment on it. Instead, he gestured to the chair across from his desk. “Please, sit.” She did. The air between them felt charged, yet neither acknowledged it. Instead, they spoke of work, of projects and expectations. It was almost easy to pretend this was just another job interview—almost. But the weight of their past lingered. At one point, as Isaac explained a new company initiative, he paused, his eyes searching hers. “It’s been a long time.” Celestine swallowed. “Yes, it has.” He leaned back, studying her. “I heard about your engagement.” Her fingers twitched at the mention of Michael, her fiancé. “Yes. Michael and I have been together for two years.” Isaac nodded slowly, his expression unreadable. “Congratulations.” She forced a smile. “Thank you.” Silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken words. Then, as if sensing the shift, Isaac straightened, returning to business. “We’ll be working closely together. I expect professionalism.” She met his gaze evenly. “Of course, Mr. Blackwood.” A ghost of a smirk tugged at his lips. “Isaac.” She hesitated, then nodded. “Isaac.” With that, the meeting ended, but the storm in her chest had only just begun. As she stepped out of his office, Celestine exhaled shakily. This job was going to be harder than she thought. Because despite the years, the heartbreak, and the different lives they now lived— A part of her still felt something. And from the way Isaac had looked at her just now— She knew he did too.
