So he had never believed her.
Just as he did not believe she was "clean," he had never believed Nina was his daughter either.
Three years ago, one of Ethan's rivals had somehow found out that he had a hidden marriage and a daughter. They came to him and delivered a paternity test report stating that Ethan and Nina were not biologically related.
Ethan flew into a rage over it and nearly had the person thrown out on the spot.
But Alice called someone over and had a paternity test done right then and there.
The result was beyond Ethan's expectations.
Nina was not his child.
Sophia refused to believe it and insisted on getting Nina tested ninety-nine times.
Even though every single result confirmed that they were father and daughter, Ethan merely pressed his fingers to his brow and said flatly that he understood.
After that, there was no reaction from him at all.
Over the years, he and Nina had grown more and more distant.
At first, no matter how busy he was, he would still make time to take her out. Later, even when Nina only wanted a hug, he acted as if he had not seen her and walked right past.
Sophia had tried to repair the relationship between him and Nina, but nothing helped.
"Fine. Since you suspect Nina isn't your daughter and refuse to save her, I'll have my lawyer send you the severance papers afterward. From then on, Nina really won't be your daughter anymore. You'd better not regret it!"
The decisiveness in her expression finally cracked Ethan's cold mask.
The words "she can be saved" stuck in his throat, almost slipping out.
But in the next instant, the paternity test from back then flashed before his eyes.
In the end, he only said a few words slowly.
"Suit yourself."
Sophia laughed in anger. She returned to the operating room, picked Nina up, and walked out while calling a doctor she knew to arrange a hospital transfer.
It was not until late that night that Nina's condition finally stabilized.
But just as Sophia walked outside for a breath of air, her wrist was suddenly seized.
Ethan's furious voice sounded beside her ear. "Come with me."
Sophia yanked her hand free and rubbed her reddened wrist. "What are you going crazy about this time?"
Ethan grabbed her again and said through gritted teeth, "Chloe wasn't unconscious. She heard our conversation instead. Now she says she doesn't want to ruin our relationship and wants to leave. You're coming with me to explain things to her."
Sophia laughed, the sound bleak and broken. "Explain what? Explain that we were already married and have a daughter together? Do you want me to slap our marriage certificate in her face and let her know she's a mistress who seduced another woman's husband?"
The moment she said that, the air around them seemed to freeze.
Ethan's gaze turned terrifyingly cold. Two words seemed to squeeze out from deep in his throat.
"Don't you dare."
"Why wouldn't I?"
Almost the instant her words fell, there was a loud thud. In his anger, Ethan flung her aside.
The force sent the world spinning around Sophia. Her forehead struck the guardrail, opening a deep gash. Blood immediately began pouring out.
Instinctively, she reached her hand toward Ethan.
"What about you?" Ethan crouched down, but he did not help her. Instead, he gripped her chin, his voice so cold it held no warmth at all. "Weren't you the one who used to be a mistress? What right do you have to call someone else that?"
When the last trace of dignity was torn apart, when the word "mistress" truly came from Ethan's mouth, Sophia still felt as if a huge wound had been ripped open in her chest. It hurt so badly that she trembled.
He stood up and looked down at her from above.
"Since you think she's a mistress, I'll announce her identity to the whole world. From now on, she'll be the Mrs. Shaw everyone sees."
With that, he strode away.
Sophia propped herself up and pressed a hand over her wound, laughing until tears came to her eyes.
Announce her to the whole world.
She suddenly remembered all those days when she had been forced to avoid suspicion around Ethan. She had been asked who her husband was. Nina had been speculated to be a child with no father...
What she had once yearned for more than anything was now being handed so easily to another woman.
All at once, she felt her heart slowly die.
And somehow, it did not hurt as much anymore.
