CHAPTER 18: THE DARKNESS BELOW

1025 Words
Blackthorne Academy disappeared into darkness. No lights. No alarms. Nothing. Only the storm outside and the terrified breathing of students trapped inside the stairwell. Someone screamed somewhere above. Another student started crying. Lyra stood frozen while darkness swallowed everything around them. Then— A flashlight clicked on. Detective Ren held the beam steady across the lower staircase. The pale light revealed dust floating through the air like ash. And beneath them… The underground door slowly creaked open by itself. Creeeeeeak. Nobody moved. Nova whispered shakily, “Nope.” The crying returned from below. Soft. Weak. Childlike. Lyra’s chest tightened painfully. Then the little boy’s voice whispered again: “Lyra…” Caius grabbed her arm immediately. “That’s not Kael.” But his voice lacked confidence. Ren’s jaw tightened. “They’re using the archive speakers.” “What archive speakers?” Nova snapped. Elowen answered quietly. “The chamber recorded voices.” A cold shiver ran through Lyra’s entire body. The detective stepped toward the underground doorway carefully. “We move now.” Nobody argued. Because the alternative was staying inside a dying academy. The group descended slowly into the darkness. The deeper they went, the colder the air became. Water dripped steadily from ancient stone walls while Ren’s flashlight cut weakly through the shadows. Lyra stayed close to Caius. Not because she trusted him completely. But because everything else felt worse. Another staircase appeared below. Then another. Blackthorne seemed endless underground. Finally, they reached a massive metal door covered in rust. The circle symbol was carved deeply into the center. Ren stopped walking. “The chamber is behind this.” Lyra stared at the door uneasily. Every instinct inside her screamed danger. Nova looked pale beside Elowen. “I miss homework.” No one responded. Ren held out his hand toward Lyra. “The keycard.” She hesitated. Then slowly handed it over. The detective inserted the silver card into a hidden slot beside the door. Nothing happened. For one terrifying second, silence remained. Then— ACCESS GRANTED. A mechanical voice echoed softly. Heavy locks shifted inside the metal walls. CLUNK. CLUNK. CLUNK. The giant door slowly began opening. Cold air rushed outward immediately. And with it came something worse. The smell. Old chemicals. Dust. And decay. Nova covered her nose instantly. “Oh God…” The chamber beyond was enormous. Circular. White walls curved high above them beneath flickering emergency lights. Rows of old hospital beds filled the room. Children’s beds. Lyra’s stomach twisted violently. Some still had small blankets folded neatly on top. Others had restraints attached to the metal frames. “No…” she whispered. Elowen looked away immediately. Caius’s entire face hardened with fury. Ren moved slowly through the room. “This was Level One.” Lyra stared around in horror. “This is where they kept children?” Nobody answered. Because the answer surrounded them already. Old toys sat abandoned in corners. Stuffed animals covered in dust. Tiny shoes beneath beds. A drawing taped crookedly onto one wall. A child’s drawing of the circle symbol. The room felt haunted. Not by ghosts. By memories. Then Lyra saw it. A small bed near the far side of the chamber. Her name carved into the metal frame. LYRA V. Her legs nearly gave out. Caius steadied her immediately. “You okay?” “No.” Her voice cracked slightly. “This was mine.” Silence filled the chamber. Another memory hit suddenly. Little Lyra sitting on the same bed while Kael secretly handed her chocolate stolen from upstairs. “Don’t tell your mom,” he whispered jokingly. The memory vanished. Tears burned unexpectedly behind her eyes. “He was kind to me,” she whispered. Caius looked away sharply. Pain crossed his face again. Real pain. “He loved you.” Lyra looked up slowly. “What?” Caius swallowed hard. “Kael would’ve done anything to protect you.” Before Lyra could answer— A screen suddenly flickered on at the center of the chamber. Everyone jumped. Static buzzed loudly. Then an old video recording appeared. The date stamped in the corner: 16 YEARS AGO. A younger Iris Vale appeared on-screen wearing a white coat. She looked exhausted. Terrified. And she was holding a small child. Lyra. The room fell silent. Video-Iris looked directly into the camera. “If anyone finds this recording…” Her voice shook slightly. “…then The Circle failed to bury the truth.” Ren stared at the screen carefully. “She made backup recordings.” Elowen whispered softly, “She hid evidence…” The video continued. “The chamber was created to study psychological conditioning in gifted children.” Lyra felt sick instantly. “Blackthorne selected students from powerful families and isolated them underground.” The screen flickered. “We were told the experiments would strengthen them.” Iris shut her eyes briefly on-screen. “We were lied to.” Caius clenched his fists tightly. The video glitched again. Then another person stepped into frame. Kael Mercer. Young. Alive. Lyra’s breath caught painfully. He looked exactly like Caius. But warmer somehow. Kinder. Kael looked directly into the camera. “If you’re watching this,” he said quietly, “then something happened to us.” The chamber became completely silent. Even Nova looked emotional now. Kael continued: “The Circle isn’t training leaders.” His expression darkened. “They’re creating obedience.” Another memory flashed violently through Lyra’s mind. Children forced to stand silently for hours. White masks watching from above. One child crying after speaking out. Then screaming. The memory shattered. Lyra grabbed her head painfully. Caius moved toward her immediately. “Lyra—” “I remember,” she whispered. The entire room froze. Tears slid down her face now. “They hurt us.” Silence followed. Then softly— A slow clap echoed through the chamber. Everyone turned instantly. Elian stood at the chamber entrance surrounded by Watchers. His silver eyes moved calmly across the room. “You were never supposed to see that recording,” he said quietly. And behind him— More masked figures stepped into the chamber. Blocking the only exit.
