Lyra’s heart stopped.
Rain crashed against the classroom windows while Detective Ren Arclight stood motionless outside beyond the courtyard lights.
Watching her.
Not the classroom.
Not Caius.
Her.
The storm flashed white across the sky, briefly illuminating his sharp face and dark coat. Even through the rain, his expression looked calm.
Too calm.
Then suddenly—
He lifted one finger slowly toward the window.
And pointed directly at her.
Nova noticed immediately.
“…Okay, that’s terrifying.”
Caius moved in front of the window at once, blocking the detective’s view.
“What does he want with me?” Lyra whispered.
Nobody answered.
That silence terrified her most.
Caius grabbed his jacket quickly.
“We need to leave this room.”
Nova frowned.
“You think he saw us?”
“He definitely saw her.”
Lyra’s chest tightened.
“Why?”
Caius looked toward the classroom door.
“Because Ren Arclight already knows who you are.”
The words hit harder than expected.
“What does that mean?”
But before Caius could explain—
The academy lights suddenly shut off.
Darkness swallowed the room instantly.
Nova cursed softly.
“Oh great. Evil school strikes again.”
Lightning flashed outside again for half a second.
Just enough for Lyra to see the detective still standing there in the rain.
Still staring upward.
Then the darkness returned.
A loud click echoed through the academy speakers.
Static buzzed.
Then Headmistress Aldridge’s voice filled the school.
“All students return to dormitories immediately.”
Her voice sounded strained.
Uneasy.
“Blackthorne Academy is now under emergency lockdown.”
Nova sighed dramatically.
“That sounds healthy.”
Another voice interrupted suddenly.
Not the headmistress.
Male.
Cold.
“Subject L must report to the east wing immediately.”
Lyra froze.
Subject L.
The voice continued.
“Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.”
The speakers died.
Silence crashed over the room.
Nova looked disturbed now.
“Yeah… I officially want to transfer schools.”
Caius looked furious.
“They’ve never done this publicly before.”
Lyra folded her arms tightly.
“Done what?”
“Announced a target.”
The word made her stomach twist painfully.
Target.
Not student.
Not person.
Target.
Rain pounded harder outside while thunder shook the old classroom windows.
Then footsteps echoed in the hallway beyond the door.
Heavy.
Multiple people.
Caius immediately motioned for silence.
The footsteps stopped outside.
Then came the sound of a key sliding into the lock.
Everyone tensed.
The door slowly opened.
Lyra’s pulse exploded—
But instead of masked guards…
Elowen Graves stepped inside.
The door shut quietly behind her.
The room remained silent.
Elowen looked perfectly calm as always in her flawless academy uniform. Her pale blonde hair fell neatly over one shoulder while her cold gray eyes moved across the room carefully.
First Nova.
Then Caius.
Finally Lyra.
“You’re making things worse,” she said calmly.
Nova blinked.
“Wow. Nice entrance.”
Caius’s expression hardened instantly.
“What do you want?”
Elowen ignored him.
Her attention remained on Lyra.
“You shouldn’t have gone underground.”
Lyra stared back cautiously.
“How do you know I did?”
One corner of Elowen’s mouth lifted slightly.
“Everyone important knows.”
That answer somehow made everything worse.
Nova crossed her arms.
“You people seriously talk like villains in mystery movies.”
Elowen finally looked at her.
“You hacked the tunnel security.”
Nova looked genuinely offended.
“You say that like it’s illegal.”
“It is illegal.”
“Technically.”
Lyra stepped forward slightly.
“Who are you really?”
Elowen studied her quietly for a long moment.
Then she answered:
“The person trying to stop you from ending up like Evelyn.”
The room became still.
Caius immediately spoke.
“She doesn’t belong to The Circle.”
Elowen looked at him sharply.
“You know that’s not true.”
Something passed between them.
Old tension.
Old secrets.
Lyra noticed immediately.
“You two know more than you’re saying.”
Neither denied it.
That alone answered enough.
Elowen walked toward Lyra slowly.
“You need to listen carefully.”
Her voice lowered.
“The Circle isn’t what you think it is.”
“Then explain it.”
Elowen hesitated.
And for the first time since meeting her…
She looked uncertain.
“They choose students with specific psychological profiles.”
Lyra frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Students who influence others easily. Students who adapt quickly under pressure.”
Nova blinked once.
“So basically emotionally unstable smart people?”
Elowen ignored her.
“The Circle trains future leaders.”
“That sounds like a cult,” Nova muttered.
Elowen’s cold eyes shifted toward Lyra again.
“Your mother was one of the best they ever had.”
The words hit like ice water.
Lyra’s throat tightened painfully.
“No.”
“It’s true.”
“She wouldn’t abandon me for this.”
Something flickered across Elowen’s face.
Pity.
“You’d be surprised what Blackthorne makes people become.”
Silence filled the classroom again.
Then suddenly—
Caius stepped forward.
“That’s enough.”
Elowen looked at him coldly.
“You still think you can protect her?”
“Yes.”
A strange sadness crossed Elowen’s face briefly.
“That’s exactly what Kael said.”
Everything stopped.
Even the storm outside seemed quieter.
Lyra stared sharply at her.
“You knew Kael?”
Elowen’s expression closed immediately.
Too late.
Lyra noticed.
Caius looked furious now.
“Don’t talk about him.”
“Why?” Elowen asked softly. “Because she’ll finally learn what really happened?”
Tension exploded inside the room instantly.
Nova slowly stepped backward.
“Okay wow. There’s definitely unresolved trauma here.”
Lyra ignored her.
Her eyes stayed locked on Caius.
“What happened to Kael?”
Caius said nothing.
“Elowen,” Lyra demanded.
The blonde girl looked at Caius one last time.
Then quietly answered:
“Kael Mercer didn’t drown.”
The room went silent.
“He was murdered.”
Lightning split the sky outside.
Lyra’s heart slammed painfully against her ribs.
“What?”
Elowen’s voice remained calm.
“He found something inside The Circle he wasn’t supposed to know.”
Caius looked ready to explode.
“Stop talking.”
But Elowen continued anyway.
“And the night he died…”
She looked directly at Lyra.
“Your mother was with him.”
Silence.
Pure silence.
Lyra’s mind spun violently.
No.
No no no.
That couldn’t be true.
Her mother couldn’t be connected to murder.
Could she?
Caius suddenly grabbed Elowen’s arm hard.
“That’s enough.”
Elowen pulled free instantly.
“She deserves the truth.”
“No,” Caius said quietly.
His gray eyes shifted toward Lyra.
“She deserves better than this place.”
Then suddenly—
A loud siren exploded outside the academy.
Red police lights flashed through the rain-covered windows.
Nova rushed toward the glass.
“Oh, this just got worse.”
Lyra stepped closer beside her.
Dozens of police cars surrounded Blackthorne Academy now.
But they weren’t alone.
Black SUVs rolled through the front gates behind them.
Dark.
Unmarked.
Dangerous-looking.
Men dressed in black stepped out carrying silver cases.
No police badges.
No academy uniforms.
And every single one wore the same white circle symbol on their gloves.
The Circle had arrived.
