Chapter 7 Breakfast was not enjoyable, Esme complained as we walked back to our room to get ready. “Was that oatmeal?” she asked. “I think so.” The “oatmeal” had been a sticky blob of gritty nuggets served in a ceramic cup. A saucer beside it offered a cube of white cheese, a pat of butter, and a boiled egg cut into quarters. “We’re going to starve all day. Did you bring anything from home we can eat? I have a bag of walnuts.” “How could I bring food when I didn’t expect to be here?” Esme didn’t answer my question.
