Chapter 8 The new room was slightly larger than the first one we’d been given, and it had a private bathroom, high ceiling, and a storage shelf running along three walls. There was a tall narrow window with white curtains centered in a wall overlooking the courtyard. Its thick, cloudy glass pane was embedded in the frame and impossible to open. The closet and dresser were packed with clothing, towels, and low-standard toiletries—toothpaste, soap, and menstrual pads made of cotton fabric.
