The forest exploded into chaos.
Massive wolves burst through the trees from every direction.
Ava barely had time to scream before the silver-eyed stranger threw her behind him protectively.
The air itself became dangerous.
The wolves surrounding them suddenly slowed.
Not because they were weak.
Because they were terrified.
Ava realized the horrifying truth immediately.
The man standing in front of her was stronger than all of them.
An Alpha.
One rogue wolf ignored the warning and lunged.
The silver-eyed stranger moved so fast Ava almost missed it.
A crack echoed through the forest.
The rogue wolf dropped lifelessly into the mud.
The others instantly backed away.
One even lowered itself submissively.
The stranger's voice turned cold.
"Leave."
Every wolf fled.
Just like that.
Ava stared at him breathlessly.
Rain continued pouring around them while the crimson moon glowed overhead.
The stranger slowly turned toward her.
His dark shirt clung to his body from the rain while silver eyes studied her far too carefully.
Like he was trying to solve a dangerous puzzle.
Ava forced herself to speak.
"Why were they chasing me?"
The stranger stayed silent briefly.
Then:
"Because of your scent."
Ava frowned.
"My what?"
His jaw tightened.
"You really don't know."
Fear crawled through her chest.
"Know what?"
Before he answered, another voice suddenly echoed through the forest.
"My king."
Several wolves emerged from the darkness.
But unlike the rogues, these wolves wore black armor.
Warriors.
One of them shifted into human form and immediately bowed.
Ava's eyes widened again.
"We tracked the rogues to this forest," the warrior said carefully.
Then he noticed Ava.
And froze.
The warrior's face lost color instantly.
"That scent..."
The silver-eyed stranger shot him a warning look.
Silence followed.
Ava's heartbeat quickened.
"Can somebody please explain what's happening?"
The warrior looked terrified to even answer.
But the stranger finally spoke.
"My name is Kael Draven."
The moment he said it, every warrior lowered their heads.
Even the air around them seemed heavier.
Ava stared at him.
She recognized the name.
Everyone did.
Kael Draven.
The Alpha King of Nightshade Kingdom.
The monster whispered about across every territory.
The king who conquered rogue armies before turning twenty-five.
The king even wolves feared.
Ava took a step backward immediately.
Kael noticed.
Something dangerous flickered behind his silver eyes.
"You fear me now."
"Shouldn't I?"
Instead of answering...
Kael stepped closer.
Ava's pulse jumped.
Rain dripped slowly from his dark hair while his silver gaze remained fixed on her.
Intense.
Possessive.
Wrong.
"What are you?" he asked quietly.
Ava frowned.
"Human."
Kael's expression darkened.
"No."
Thunder cracked overhead.
Then suddenly, Ava felt a burning pain explode beneath her skin.
She gasped sharply.
Silver light flickered across her wrist.
Everyone froze.
The warriors looked horrified.
Kael's face went completely still.
A strange symbol slowly appeared beneath Ava's skin.
A crescent moon stained with silver fire.
One warrior whispered shakily:
"The Blood Moon mark..."
Kael stared at Ava like the world had just changed.
Because it had.
And somewhere deep inside the darkness...
Something ancient finally awakened.
