I awoke to the overwhelming scent of hospital disinfectant invading my nostrils, filling the room with its pungency. The silence was broken only by the rhythmic beeping of the machine beside me. Slowly, I fluttered my eyes open, squinting against the brightness of the light above my head. As my vision cleared, I saw a figure seated beside me, a hand gently clasping mine.
