ROME This day felt like a gift I had not earned. There was still a lot of chaos outside the mansion walls, yet none of that seemed to matter as I sat on the couch with Indy beside me. Bliss was not a word I used often. It felt indulgent. But that was what it was. We were seated close enough that our knees brushed whenever she shifted. The television flashed before us, casting pale blue light across her face. She had chosen to sit on my injured side despite my protest that she would be more comfortable on the other. She said she wanted to make sure I did not move too much. The movie playing was something about vampires, a dramatic and overly romanticized story about immortals who sparkled more than they hunted. I had picked it without remembering the plot, thinking it would amuse her.
