Rome kept his promise.
The first week, I told myself it was just to keep his face.
The second week, I told myself it was his stubbornness.
By the third, I could no longer pretend it was anything but devotion.
He traveled on Saturdays.
I learned that not from him, because he never volunteered the cost of his choices, but from one of his guards whom I cornered near the well while pretending to examine the repaired stonework.
“When does he leave the city?” I asked.
The guard hesitated for a second before answering. “Saturday at dawn, Lady Indy.”
“He works from Monday to Friday, right?”
“Yes,” he answered again. “He’s very busy these days.”
“If you leave this place at lunchtime, then what time do you arrive back in the city?”
“We reach Algard close to midnight.”
