The rain continued without pause, pounding hard against the wooden roof of the hidden sanctuary. Lila’s cloak was soaked through, heavy with water, and cold against her skin. The ground beneath her boots was slick with mud, and tangled roots slowed her steps as she moved toward the cottage.
Darian walked close behind her, alert and tense. His hand remained near the hilt of his weapon as he scanned the dark forest. When they reached the door, he pushed it open without hesitation.
Warm air rushed out to meet them, carrying the sharp scent of dried herbs. Light from inside spilled outward, revealing a small room filled with shelves of old books, glass jars containing strange materials, and unfamiliar tools arranged with careful precision. At the center of the room stood a woman with silver-streaked hair and sharp eyes. Her posture was straight, her expression unreadable.
“You are late,” the woman said evenly. “The storm does not excuse delay.”
Lila pulled her cloak tighter around herself, her teeth chattering. “We didn’t have a choice,” she said. “Something was following us. Shadows.”
The woman studied her closely, then gave a slight nod. “Then you have already felt the change.”
Lila hesitated. “Felt what?”
“The awakening,” the woman replied. “Your bloodline has been dormant for centuries. Danger accelerates the process.”
Darian stepped forward. “She doesn’t understand what’s happening. She needs help.”
“You will receive guidance,” the woman said. "Understanding will take time." She went back to Lila. “My name is Evelyn Thorne. You will learn discipline here, or you will lose control.”
Lila swallowed. “I don’t even know what I am. Why is this happening to me?”
Evelyn did not look away. “Because the Shadowed King is rising. He is searching for what you carry. Your power is tied to his return.”
The weight of her words settled heavily on Lila. She had lived her entire life unnoticed, struggling to survive. Now she stood in a place she did not understand, surrounded by people who spoke of magic and ancient things. Evelyn pointed to a large table laden with parchment and books. Take a seat. Training begins now.
Lila obeyed, lowering herself onto a wooden chair. Her hands shook as she opened the nearest book. The symbols on the page seemed unfamiliar, yet something about them felt instinctive. She focused on a single thought and whispered, “Stop.”
A small burst of light flickered at her fingertips. The candle flames in the room swayed and leaned in. Lila gasped and pulled her hands back. The light vanished.
Evelyn nodded. “You see the response. Magic reacts to intention, emotion, and control. Fear strengthens it. So does anger. Without discipline, it will overwhelm you.”
Darian remained near the wall, watching in silence. His gaze lingered on Lila, then shifted away, his expression troubled.
They continued for hours. Lila struggled to repeat even the simplest actions. Each attempt left her exhausted. Sweat soaked her hair, mixing with the rain she had not yet dried from. When a surge of energy burst from her hands and knocked several books to the floor, she cried out in shock.
“Control,” Evelyn said firmly. “Always control.”
“I’m trying,” Lila snapped. “It’s too much.”
Darian stepped in, steadying her by the shoulders. “Slow down,” he said quietly. “Focus. Don’t fight it—guide it.”
She took a deep breath and tried again. This time, the glow in her hands appeared briefly and remained stable before fading.
Evelyn allowed herself a small nod. “Better. But you are not ready. And the Shadowed King will not wait.”
Lila’s stomach tightened. “What happens when he finds me?”
Darian moved closer. "Your power is connected to more than just you," he explained. "As it grows, the bond strengthens."
“What bond?” she asked.
He did not answer.
The fire crackled behind them. The rain continued to strike the roof. Lila understood then that her old life was gone. Her previous identity no longer mattered. She had crossed into something dangerous and irreversible.
Far beyond the sanctuary, something ancient stirred. The awakening had begun, and it would not go unnoticed.
