Chapter 22 : The Hidden Truth

363 Words
The production team’s investigation reached a fever pitch when they demanded a one-on-one session with "Elias" to discuss his "missing" academic transcripts. Elara walked into the conference room, her palms sweating despite the freezing, air-conditioned chill of the office. The lead investigator, a man with eyes like polished flint, had a folder open on his desk that contained the entirety of her fabricated life. He looked up, his expression unreadable, and pushed a document across the table. It was a request for a physical, notarized copy of her records—a document she did not possess. Elara’s mind raced, searching for an excuse, a lie, anything to buy more time. She leaned into the persona of the arrogant, aloof Elias, forcing a dismissive sneer. "I told you my records are in storage in the city," she said, her voice steady despite the internal tremor. "Why are you harassing me over paperwork when the gala is just days away? My talent should be enough for this competition, not my past." The investigator didn't blink. "Your talent is undisputed, Elias, but your history is a glaring vacuum. We need proof, or we disqualify you by morning." Elara left the room, the weight of the threat pressing down on her lungs. She found Jaxen waiting in the shadows of the hallway. She didn't have to speak; the look on her face told him everything. "They found a gap," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Jaxen pulled her into an empty supply closet, the darkness enveloping them. "We have twenty-four hours," he said, his voice a low, urgent hum. "If we cannot forge a notarized document that holds up to their scrutiny, we are finished." The desperation in his voice mirrored her own. They were two fugitives in a high-tech fortress, attempting to outwit a system designed to expose them. She looked at Jaxen, seeing the first flicker of genuine empathy beneath his cold, calculated exterior. They were bound by their shared deception, their futures tethered to a lie that was rapidly unraveling. She felt a surge of adrenaline; she had to be better, faster, and smarter than the people who were trying to destroy her.
