Chapter 2 : The lion's Den

349 Words
The Vanguard headquarters was a towering glass-and-steel monolith that seemed to slice the city skyline. Inside, the audition hall felt like a high-pressure courtroom. Jaxen Thorne, the group’s founder and lead dancer, sat in the centre of the judges' table. He was notoriously cold, a man who viewed dance not as an art but as a rigid mathematical equation of perfection. His reputation preceded him—he was known to cut dancers mid-routine if they missed a single beat. When Elara—now posing as Elias—stepped onto the stage, the other auditionees snickered at her slight frame compared to their muscular builds. Jaxen didn't even look up from his tablet. "Music," he commanded, his voice devoid of warmth. The track that blasted through the sound system was a jagged, experimental electronic piece designed specifically to break anyone who wasn't masterfully improvisational. Elara felt the panic rising; this wasn't the track she and Elias had practised. Her lungs constricted. If she stumbled, it wouldn't just be an audition failure—it would be the end of her brother’s dream and the loss of their home. But as the heavy bass dropped, she forced herself to breathe. She stopped trying to mimic her brother’s aggressive bravado and started surrendering to the rhythm. She incorporated her core-strengthening ballet training into the street-style choreography, creating something raw, unexpected, and hypnotic. She moved with a centre of gravity that defied physics, executing sharp, percussive footwork that blended seamlessly into fluid, gravity-defying leaps. The silence that followed the final note was suffocating. The other dancers watched with slack-jawed expressions. Jaxen finally stood up, his eyes locked onto her movements. He didn't offer a smile, but he marked a bold, heavy check on his tablet. "Your style has changed since the regional showcase, 'Elias,'" Jaxen said, his voice dropping an octave, a hint of sharp suspicion colouring his tone. "It’s... softer. More controlled. Yet somehow more dangerous. You’re in. Don't let the ego get to your head; we'll see if you can actually keep up with the professional grind."
