Danny had not slept in four days. Ruth could tell from the way he looked, that particular hollow quality around his eyes that showed up when he pushed himself past the point his body was willing to cooperate with. He was sitting across from her at the kitchen table with his phone face up between them and a cold cup of coffee he had forgotten about twenty minutes ago and he was doing that thing he did when he was scared but refusing to admit it, talking too fast and too much about practical things.
