All the effort, all the secrecy, to ensure the past stays in the past where it belongs, literally dead and buried, may have all been for nothing. Why did I give in? She berates herself. Masochistically, she hits the replay button in her mind, over and over, again and again. Why cry? Why cry here, at my place of employment? Why lose composure with a coworker? Now Aida will know something is amiss, and in an effort to help, she will tell someone else, who will tell someone else, until the process culminates in Lydia realizing who I am, what I survived, who I lost, and the secret will not be so secret anymore. It will become commonplace knowledge, circulating amongst the people I spend all day, every day with. Why did I give in?
