Recipes A Taste of HomeWhile food is not a central theme is this novel, it is in life. Food defines each of us on so many levels. A particular smell can immediately transport us mentally and emotionally to another time and place. The tastes of dishes we grew up with are exactly that, a taste of home.
Refugees leave home with what they can carry in their arms, which means their physical homes are always left behind. Recipes however, are carried in the mind and the heart and thus transcend place. They have the power to go wherever we go.
For that reason, food plays an intricate and invaluable role in all of our lives – whether we recognize it or not. For that purpose, each of the characters have shared a taste of what is home to them in the subsequent pages.
