Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. "Police! Open up!" Quincy turned to her sister, her face pale and stricken. "What do we do?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "We open the door," her sister replied, her voice shaking. "We call the police. We tell them everything." Quincy nodded, her mind a jumble of fear and confusion. She dropped the fireplace poker and stumbled towards the door, her legs feeling like lead. As she opened the door, she was greeted by two police officers, their badges glinting in the moonlight. "Are you Quincy?" one of the officers asked, his voice serious and business-like. "Yes, I am," Quincy replied, her voice trembling. "We received a report of a disturbance here," the officer said. "Can you tell us what happened?" Quincy took a deep breath, her mind racing. "My ex-boyfriend, Adrian, he came here," she said, her voice shaking. "He broke the window, he was going to hurt us..." The officers exchanged a look, their expressions grave. "You're safe now, ma'am," one of the officers said, his voice gentle. "We need you to tell us exactly what happened. Can you do that for us?" Quincy nodded, her mind a blur of fear and adrenaline. She recounted the story as best she could, her voice trembling as she described the confrontation with Adrian. The officers listened intently, taking notes and asking clarifying questions. When she was finished, one of them put a hand on her shoulder. As the police officers took down the details of the incident, Quincy's sister stepped forward, her voice steady and firm. "Adrian's been stalking Quincy for weeks," she said. "He's been making threats, leaving strange messages on her phone. We were terrified." The officers nodded, their expressions grave. "We'll do everything we can to make sure he's brought to justice," one of them said. "But for now, you both need to stay safe. Do you have somewhere you can go, somewhere you'll be protected?" Quincy's mind raced, her thoughts a blur of fear and confusion. She couldn't go home - that would be the first place Adrian would look for her. And she couldn't stay here, with the broken window and the shattered glass. "I could stay with a friend," she said, her voice trembling. "If that's okay?" "That's a good idea," one of the officers said. "Do you need help getting there?" Quincy shook her head. "I can drive myself," she said, her voice wavering. "Alright then," one of the officers said. "We're going to arrange for a patrol car to keep an eye on your house for the next few days, just in case Adrian tries to come back." Quincy nodded, feeling a mix of relief and fear. She wasn't sure if Adrian would try to come after her again, but she knew she couldn't take any chances. "Thank you," she said, her voice small and shaken. "I appreciate everything you're doing." The officers nodded, their expressions serious and professional. "We'll be in touch with any updates on the case," one of the officers said. "And don't hesitate to call us if you have any concerns or if Adrian tries to contact you." Quincy nodded again, her mind already whirling with what-ifs and scenarios. She needed to get to her friend's house, she needed to call Ryan and tell him what had happened, and she needed to figure out how to keep herself and her sister safe. "I'll do that," she said, her voice still shaking. "Thank you." As the police officers finished up their report and headed out to their patrol car, Quincy turned to her sister, her mind still spinning. "Are you going to be okay?" she asked, her voice still trembling. "Do you want to come with me?" Her sister shook her head. "No, I'll be fine," she said, her voice steady and strong. "I have a baseball bat under my bed and I'm not afraid to use it if he tries anything." Quincy smiled, despite the fear in her heart. "You're amazing," she said. Quincy gave her sister one last hug, promising to call her as soon as she got to her friend's house. Then she climbed into her car, her hands shaking as she turned the key in the ignition. As she pulled away from the curb, her mind was still racing with fear and uncertainty. What if Adrian came back? What if he was still out there, watching and waiting? But as she drove through the quiet streets, she tried to focus on the sound of her own breathing, the steady beat of her heart. The drive to her friend's house seemed to take forever, each mile a stretch of unfamiliar pavement, each street sign a reminder of her vulnerability. But finally, she pulled into her friend's driveway, her heart racing as she turned off the engine. "Quincy?" her friend's voice called out from inside the house. "Is that you?" Quincy took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "Yes, it's me," she called back. "Can I come in?" Her friend opened the door, her expression a mix of confusion and concern. "What's going on?" she asked, her voice filled with worry. "Are you okay?" Quincy took a step inside, her body shaking with a mix of fear and relief. "I'm okay," she said, her voice trembling. "Or at least, I'm going to be. But I need to tell you what happened." Her friend's eyes widened, and she immediately led Quincy to the couch, where they both sat down. As Quincy recounted the events of the evening, her friend's face grew increasingly concerned. "That's terrifying," she said, her voice full of sympathy. "I can't believe he did that." "I know," Quincy said, her voice shaky and weak. "And I'm scared he's going to come after me again." "Well, you're safe here," her friend said, her voice firm. "You can stay as long as you need to. And I'm going to help you come up with a plan to keep you safe." With the events of the night still fresh in her mind, Quincy tried to sleep, but her thoughts were racing. She tossed and turned, images of Adrian's angry face flashing through her mind. What did he want? Why had he come back now, after all this time? She tried to push the thoughts away, but they kept coming back. Finally, exhausted and frustrated, she gave up on sleep and got up from the bed. She wandered into the living room, where she saw her friend curled up on the couch, her eyes still closed in slumber. As Quincy sat on the couch next to her friend, she felt a sudden pang of guilt. Her friend had been so kind and supportive, offering her a place to stay and a shoulder to cry on. But Quincy knew that her presence here was putting her friend in danger too. She looked out the window at the dark street outside, wondering what Adrian was doing, where he was, if he was still looking for her. A wave of fear washed over her, and she shivered. "Quincy?" Quincy turned at the sound of her friend's voice. "I'm sorry I woke you," she said, her voice low and troubled. "I didn't mean to." Her friend sat up on the couch, rubbing her eyes. "It's okay," she said, her voice thick with sleep. "I'm here for you, Quincy. What's going on?" Quincy sighed, the weight of the world on her shoulders. "I just feel like I'm putting you in danger," she said, her voice breaking. "I shouldn't have come here." Her friend shook her head, reaching out to take Quincy's hand in hers. "Don't say that," she said, her voice soft and reassuring. "You're not putting me in danger. You're my friend, and I want to help you. We'll figure this out together." Quincy looked at her friend, tears welling up in her eyes. "Thank you," she whispered. "I don't know what I'd do without you." Her friend squeezed her hand. As dawn broke over the horizon, Quincy and her friend began to make plans. They called the police to report the break-in and Adrian's threats, and they started researching options for self-defense classes and legal assistance. "I won't let him win," Quincy said, her voice full of determination. "I won't let him take away my life again." Her friend nodded, her face serious. "We're going to make sure he doesn't," she said. "We'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe, Quincy. You're not going through this alone."
