Two weeks passed after May’s cruel punishment, yet I was just as bitter as I had been on that day. The wounds that the Matron had inflicted on all of us had just about healed causing only minimal pain if we moved too quickly. Nick’s face had finally healed, all signs of the black eye he had been given were gone. His two hazel eyes gleamed from his well-crafted face with ease. The deep gash across my face had healed to an ugly purple scab. I knew that it would leave a terrible scar, but the damage was done. Like I had expected, May had changed. The beating that the Matron had inflicted on her caused her to withdraw completely from who she used to be. She had spent most of the two weeks hiding in our room, crying when she thought I was either sleeping or out of hearing range. I didn’t know
