Luke barely breathed for fear of making too much sound while he waited for Whitney. He listened raptly for any sound outside the room, but even as time stretched, he didn't hear any signs of the Doyens coming down the hallway or the other members waking up from their sedation. At first, Luke found it odd that the Doyens didn't alert everyone at the church over the intercom, and that the church didn't go into lockdown at a murderous intruder being inside the premises.
