ESCAPE FROM THE BLACK RASPBERRY I was wakened in the morning by noise. There was a search underway in the wagon. A police railroad patrol, along with the train conductors, was clearing out the train. I was miraculously able to climb along the third-tier shelves between the ceiling and the pipes that divided the coupe, into the part of the old wagon that had already been checked, and at the stop, climbing down into the corridor, I went out onto the platform along with the passengers. The station turned out to be quite a big one, and I decided to stay there. I spent my day in curious investigation. I went to the local market and stood there by a guy who was cutting silhouettes from life out of black paper, and doing it so well that I really envied him. If only I could learn such a trade! I
